UNFINISHED MODERNIZATIONS - BETWEEN UTOPIA AND PRAGMATISM
Date du début: 1 mai 2010,

The project "Unfinished Modernisations - Between Utopia and Pragmatism" is a long-term collaborative platform of six organizations from four countries: TrajekT and Umetnostna galerija Maribor (Slovenia), the Croatian Architects' Society and the Institute for Contemporary Architecture (Croatia), the Belgrade Architects Society (Serbia), and the Coalition for Sustainable Development (fFormer Republic of Macedonia). Its goal is to research and disseminate knowledge about the production and use of built environment in South Eastern Europe and to foster trans-national collaboration and mobility of architects, planners, artists, and urban activists, within the region and in the broader European context. The project will explore the ways in which divergent concepts of modernization conditioned architecture and urban phenomena in the region in the past sixty years. It comprises four thematic sections: Critical Theory and Historical Reinterpretations; Outlining the Phenomena and Mediating Architecture; Transitional and Post-transitional Conditions; and Current Practises and Perspectives. The project is the first comprehensive attempt to interpret the architectural culture and urban environments of the region within their social, economic, and political contexts, bringing together collaborative efforts and diverse research methods aimed at the education and civic empowerment of the public. The activities will include:- Twelve research topics, seven of which will be explored by trans-national teams;- Five conferences and workshops, including public lectures by prominent European experts;- Five exhibitions;- Three publications, including a final book and a web-site with extensive work-in-progress database accessible to the public- Other public events, including a video competition and a film festival. The project is relevant on European level for drawing attention to unique and yet unexplored processes of urban and social modernization.
