FINDING A SUCCESSFUL TEAM CLIL FOR OUR EUROPEAN STUDENTSCONTEXTDon Milani High School is a secondary school situated in the north of Italy. It is a mid-sized school, with 970 pupils, who study Tourism and Business or Social Studies. The education staff is over a hundred with 144 teaching. The school is particularly focused on promoting language learning such as English, German, French and Spanish through new teaching methodologies. Mastering foreign languages, both in communicative and cognitive functions, has become a highly esteemed key competence in an integrated Europe. Thus, our school challenges are to enhance the foreign language skills and competences of the students and raise awareness both in students and teachers that the knowledge of foreign languages is a priority for a more successful labour market integration.OBJECTIVESWe intend to foster and support new flexible teaching pathways in lines with learners’ needs and objectives and equip a team of CLIL teachers ready for those challenges, since we firmly believe in the opportunities of a Team Teaching approach. CLIL methodology integrates new teaching and learning methods, promoting active learning for the pupils’ involved and long life learning for their teachers, who play a new role in the teaching performances. Furthermore, our school aims at adopting innovative teaching practices that take into account the different way of learning of the so-called "digital natives", with the awareness that students today learn differently than young people of previous generations. PARTICIPANTSThere will be 21 participants, three of them are the group leaders and teachers of English with a C2 level, whereas the other 18 participants have a minimum language level corresponding to B1 on the Common European Framework and are qualified secondary teachers who will be engaged in delivery of subjects across the school curriculum through the medium of English. All of them have already taken part in some CLIL Team workshops and are keen and enthusiastic about going abroad, refreshing their English and moreover reinforcing their teaching skills, confirming the principle of lifelong learning. ACTIVITIESFirstly, the 21 participants will take part in a preparatory session from September 2016 to January 2017 at Don Milani High School divided as follow:- a 12-hour course about CLIL methodologya and practices;- a 20-hour General English course (B1 - C1 level). Then, the 21 participants will be divided into three groups and each group will attend a 5-day tailor made intensive course at the Norwich Institute for Language Education (UK), respectively one group in November 2016, one group in December 2016 and one group in February 2017.In the UK, the participants will be staying in home-stay accommodation. The focus of the course will be both on English language improvement (20-hour course of General English) and development of key concepts and theories in CLIL methodology (10-hour course). During their staying, they will visit a local high school. Once back home, the CLIL team will have to prepare some methodology appropriate to CLIL in a secondary context and materials, assessment and testing. Furthermore, they will have to support the implementation of other CLIL team within the school.RESULTS AND IMPACTWe expect to have short term benefits on the competence acquired by the participants and on the new role of the teachers and the way to cooperate together, since working in CLIL team implies collaborative work among teachers. The long term benefits are to be found in the students language competences, since using English as a medium for learning various subjects is a more efficient route in providing functional language proficiency than traditional foreign language. Then the CLIL team project will promote the creation and development of a regional network, providing opportunities for cooperation among other CLIL teams of other schools in order to communicate and share the outcomes of our project.
