The Jugendkulturzentrum (JUKUZ) is a municipal institution that carries out communal youth work in the town of Aschaffenburg. The target groups are adolescents, children and families. The European volunteer actively assists in projects of the “Mobile and International Youth Work”. The European volunteer has the opportunity to help create sport events, holiday activities at the adventure playground, work camps and youth exchanges. Furthermore, he/she participates in the youth radio group, the media work shop, the music office and other open work-shops. Apart from the volunteer’s learning experiences that comprise independence, responsibility, reliability, language acquisition, forming new friendships and socializing, we would like to introduce our target groups to intercultural exchange through the help of the European volunteer. Part of our self-conception is tolerance, freedom from violence, openness and plurality. An intercultural dialogue develops through the personal contact with the volunteer. We would like our volunteer to be between the ages of 20 to 30, male or female, interested in sport projects and in working with adolescents, open, communicative and curious to discover new things. For the project period from January to September 2015, the following activities are planned: Holiday games during the Easter, Pentecost and summer holidays, sport projects at schools and the visit of a group from Perth/Scotland with which we are town-twinned. IN VIA coordinates the project and is responsible for its organization on site and the mentoring of the volunteer. A great emphasis is placed on regular pedagogical support by the tutors. It is important for us that the European volunteer feels welcome and is able to develop freely in a good and friendly environment. Indispensable from the start are therefore personal talks as well as regular project visits. The volunteer takes part in the Café International. It is a meeting place for young people of all nationalities. The European volunteer assists the JUKUZ with 30 working hours per week. In addition, 3 to 8 hours a week are set aside for the volunteer to develop his/her creativity and language skills. During this time he/she can introduce his/her own ideas to the project as well as execute them. The volunteer either visits a language course or meets with a language tandem partner. The instructor and the tutor help the volunteer to find a good mixture between the different activities based on the volunteer’s individual needs. Regular monitoring ensures the volunteer’s progress and gives the opportunity to adjust the goals that are set if and when necessary. On the one hand, the desired results are to strengthen and expand the volunteer’s personal development, the improvement of the volunteer’s language skills as well as the implementation and execution of the volunteer’s own ideas to the project. On the other hand, a variety of different media are used to make the volunteer’s experiences open to a broad public: e.g. reports in the local press, youth magazine, local paper, internet pages of the project partners, blogs, Youtube videos or radio reports. Various activities are designed to produce further learning experiences, e.g. our idea of a City Bound Project. The European volunteer of the JUKUZ and other European volunteers as well as visitors of our Café International participate in this activity. The aim is to exchange something cheap “an apple and an egg” for something valuable. The participants get into contact with the citizens in a hands-on way and inform them about the European voluntary service and hand out the brochure “Tapentenwechsel” which contains detailed information about the EVS. The effect and the long-term benefit is an intercultural coalescence of all citizens of Aschaffenburg, independent of their nationality, culture, religion or social background. In sport, no cultural, religious or social boundaries exist. The only thing that is important is the community. Through sport, a sense of belonging together develops as well. Planned activities like this one help to draw attention to the EVS. Other clubs in Aschaffenburg might therefore also become interested in participating in the ERASMUS+ program.
