Überwachung galore – All Eyes on you! Das gläserne Jahrhundert und wir als Bürger/innen

“I don’t want to live in a world where everything that I say, everything I do, everyone I talk to, every expression of creativity or love or friendship is recorded.” - Edward Snowden, ex-employee of the NSA and PRISM whistle-blower "You can't have 100-percent security and also have 100-percent privacy and zero inconvenience. We're going to have to make some choices as a society.” - Barack Obama, President of the United States of America “I hope, if our grandchildren look upon these early days of the internet they will not get upset about us. We [...] have a moral responsibility for the internet– and no time to lose.” - Bruce Schneier, US-American expert for cryptography and computer safety. The internet changes everything, if we want or not. The new digital opportunities have a huge impact on all areas of life. Similar to the industrialisation of the 19th century the digitalisation will move and challenge manhood in the 21st century. In the past and today not everything what glitters is gold. We know from economics the term of “creative destruction”, saying, that new things that come erase old things and that this is a necessary process. This implies already that change always includes uncertainty, familiarization and to overcome old traditions and habits. A new – sometimes unwanted – reorientation is needed. Therefore digitalisation is for many people in different areas not a progress but more the root of all evil. In our European education project we are going to face a darker side of all those new digital opportunities – surveillance. Already this phrasing is tendentious and can raise dissent. There are many people who do not see surveillance in a negative way but new chances to tackle dangers – have a look at the quote of Obama. For others this is just the beginning of the end of individual privacy. See Edward Snowden. Our societies have to deal with those new challenges as the third quote shows. We are going to lift the curtain and try to have a neutral view on the topic “surveillance”. We will bit the topic in a European context and include different perspectives to get a broad impression of the topic and its valuations. This includes transnational assessments as the internet does not stop on borders like other phenomenon’s like migration, terror and pollution. We would like to tackle issues which are not only covered by mainstream media like the NSA scandal. Have you ever heard about RFID or INDECT or do you know what a “silent SMS” is? How does it look like when it comes to surveillance by your employer, what do company do with data of the citizens? These and many more questions will get our interest. The project will be realised on purpose in an international environment with participants from eight different countries to add the cultural differences about the topic. Moreover the intercultural learning atmosphere will be crucial for the project as it will be a very intensive and challenging opportunity for the young people where they can grow and learn. The methods of the project are very innovative and various and will animate the young Europeans to participate actively.
