Comprehensive school 2c Durendael has 3 departments one of which is the bilingual department. There are about 600 pupils ( 12-18 years old) and it is about 33% of the total school population. In order to improve the development of the teachers involved and the results of the students we would like to send 20 of them to attend a course of Content and Language Integrated Learning(CLIL) in the UK. These teachers already teach in the bilingual department and are qualfied in English. Most of them have Proficiency level. They will go Carlisle to attend an intensive programme of 1 week and will stay in private Bed & Breakfast homes.They will be accompanied by tuors and native speakers all week long. Visiting schools is part of the programme. Prepatory phase: The 20 teachers will have several meetings in order to draw up their own learning question and tuning it with the others. Executive phase: Teachers wiil participate in the course in Carlisle from 21-27 February 2016 Draft Programme: -Sunday Arrival Pick up Newcastle (airport or ferry) Visit to Hadrian’s Wall (for morning/lunchtime arrivals) Transfer to accommodation Evening: free -Monday Am: Icebreakers, expectations, the nature of CLIL Pm: Example lesson-the stages of CLIL teaching /or English language: Use of idioms Evening: free (suggestions for activities) -Tuesday Am: Learning styles & classroom English – extending your classroom vocabulary Pm: “Talk as you walk” – a guided excursion with English language input Evening: preparation for school visit/optional cultural input -Wednesday Visit to a local school. Delegates will have the opportunity to spend a day in a local school and observe lessons in their subject area. They will be given linguistic and cultural tasks to perform throughout the day. This has huge advantages for the delegates, not least because it allows them to ask subject-related questions and also presents an opportunity for school links and exchanges. Evening: Feedback on school visit -Thursday Am: Planning - How do I combine subject and language? Commencement of project work. Pm: Project work (We ask teachers to bring materials that they would like to develop and use in their classrooms back home) Evening: native speaker chats over dinner -Friday (Lake District Venue) Am: Sharing session & feedback on English/teaching Pm: Sharing session (contd) Evaluation Excursion & free time for bookshops etc Evening: Final meal to celebrate end of course. -Saturday Departure We are very keen that our courses have as much impact on classroom practice as possible and a major outcome of the course is the development of key strategies, principles and materials that teachers can trial with their classes on their return. Teachers will be immersed in English for the week with opportunities to speak with native speakers informally and to build on their own intercultural awareness. As we practice what we preach, teachers constantly experience activities and techniques that they can also use with their own students – inside and outside of the classroom. Through this “loop input” we therefore explore transferrable skills in an international setting – developing language, methodology, intercultural awareness, team building and life skills. Learning outcomes: By the end of the course delegates will have • explored the basic principles behind CLIL (TTO) teaching; • experienced at first hand many active learning strategies and techniques and considered how these might be adapted their own subjects and contexts; • had the opportunity to improve their fluency in English and increase their confidence in using English in the classroom; • will have looked at ways of encouraging pupils to use English in the classroom; • will have worked on projects (planning, development of materials, etc) of their choice; • will have had a truly “British” experience with emphasis on enhancing their own intercultural awareness. Reflective phase: the teachers will write down their personal outcomes, discuss them with the teamhead and together they will discuss how to implentate their gained knowledge in their lessons, how to share it with other colleagues and how to strengthen the development plan of the bilingual department disseminated phase There will be an extra staff meeting of the bilingual department in order to discuss the results of the refelective phase and how to implement them in the department.
