Project background and implementationWith our project „ Travel through the generations: working in a multigenerational house“ in the Mehrgenerationenhaus (MGH) in Johannesberg, we want to promote the competences of our European volunteer (EV). The aim is to build a solid foundation which later helps the EV with his career choice. Also, the EV‘s social commitment is strengthened even beyond Europe’s borders. All partners are likewise involved. The EV is incorporated into the working life of the MGH. Each week hours are set aside for improving his language skills and developing and implementing his own project ideas. Participant and activitiesThe EV who is going to support the MGH is 18 years old and from the city Rennes in France. The MGH offers different activities like lectures, courses etc. and is an open meeting place for people of all generations and with diverse backgrounds. The EV‘ll actively support, accompany and help create those activities. He’ll also create, plan and carry out his own project under the guidance of his tutor. Method of project implementationThrough the experiences gained during the EVS, the young person acquires further qualifications on an informal, personal and professional level. Key competences are further developed.Scope of the EV work: 30 h/week supporting the activities of the MGH and 8 h/week for language development and individual projects. Getting to know the motivation and interests of the EV is an important starting point for a good cooperation and a successful EVS year.Project aims, results and effectsPromotion of the EV:The chances on the job market are enhanced through the gained competences, qualifications and language skills. They’ll be documented in the Youth pass.Promotion of children and youth work:Children and adolescents are supported in their needs through changing learning opportunities and projects. Through the EV, they experience an exchange which wakens their interest for intercultural topics and promotes mutual learning.Incorporation of all people:The MGH supports people with phyiscal disabilities and is a support network for citizens in all life situations. Families, single parents, fellow citizens and the elderly are offered a wide variety of activities and experience support within this community.Incorporation of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants:The MGH is an open meeting place where refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are integrated and supported and meet others through the wide range of activities and language courses.Tolerance and plurality is promoted through this integration. The intense exchange with refugees results in the visitors reduction of prejudices, racism and the promotion of a cross-national community spirit.Networking:The MGH is a place for networking between local clubs and institutions as well as church groups, initiatives of youth work and course offers of the adult education centre. Furthermore, a network between citizens develops and with it the cooperation of different generations.Promotion and conveyance of European values:Democrative processes, participation in decision making, equality and plurality are initiated and carried out. Promotion and conveyance of European values take place through the project in the MGH which strengthens the sense of belonging to the EU.Sport projects:Through various sport projects for all target groups, participation in sportive and physical activities is encouraged.Promotion of multilingualism:The multilingualism of the EV is promoted through speaking German on a daily basis and the visit of a German language course. Also, staff and guests are confronted with the importance of language. Through the interaction with the language skills of visitors with a migration or refugee background, new experiences and fields of learning are created for all.Long-term benefitsEffects and long-term benefits present themselves through increasing the chances on the job market for the EV, the integration of disadvantaged people and also the intregration of refugees and migrants into the community. Prejudices and racism are reduced and tolerance and non-violent cooperation are promoted. The participation of all generations in democratic processes and the promotion and conveyance of European values will continue into the future.
