The project is in line with IDC’s mission to promote the full integration of Albanian culture into mainstream European culture by publishing works of literature that represent the best European literature has to offer. This mission stems from the realization that the long isolation from Europe has led to a worrying ignorance of the European literary heritage on the part of the Albanian public.Most of the authors proposed, like J.Conrad, K.Hamsun, I.Nemirovski, J.Giono, G.Bassani, J.G.Ballard are classics of European literature, but very little known in Albania. ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, by Mark Haddon, is a beautiful novel that has at its heart the story of an autistic child. In fact, the theme of human marginalization constitutes one of the leitmotifs of the project. The two novels of Georgia Bassani deal with the subject of anti-Semitism and that of marginalization because of sexual orientation. This choice reflects IDC’s focus on the publication of works that represent some of the best achievements of European literature. Furthermore, the selection also adheres to the second operating criterion that guides the publishing activity of IDC: to focus on the publication of high quality works which, for commercial reasons, would never see the light of publication.Following their publication, IDC will undertake the promotion of the project. Initially, the information will be dissiminated through IDC’s web page, Facebook account and a printed and electronic monthly newsletter. IDC will also organize a number of public promotion events. To this end, IDC has concluded an agreement with the University of Tirana for a joint presentation, focusing not only on the proposed books, but also on a broader discussion on 20th century European literature. Other events will be in cooperation with other local or international organizations, like British Council, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, etc.
