TRANS-EUR(H)OPE-THEATRE: Design of a transnational music-theatre-play
This mobility project for young people combined language and intercultural learning with theatrical performance. The participants composed a theatre-play dealing with current (European) issues such as migration, mobility, (youth)unemployment, democratic reforms, and social solidarity and engagement. Against this background, the participants could find the opportunity to reflect their fears, hopes and visions concerning Europe, in order to contribute to construction of future society. While depicting these topics from their points of view these youths brought their ideas and reflections on stage by producing a music-theatre-play based on the story of the film "Titanic".
Therefore, 40 young people at the age of 16 to 21 from Germany, France, Spain and Turkey came together during three meetings. Besides their knowledge of German (B1+) they shared their interest and/or experience in playing theatre and music, and their willingness to participate actively in this project.
The first meeting in Berlin (DE) aimed at an intercultural exchange, the introduction and practice of playing theatre as well as the initial draft of the various acts that dealt with the issues stated above. The design of these acts and its contents were the result of the collaboration of the participants. However, guidelines, advice, and help was given by teachers and theatre-experts who also accompanied the work-flow throughout the whole project.
After the first meeting the participants were cooperating with the help of an internet-blog, e-mail and skype to present the ongoing as well as results and, at the same time, to follow each other's progress. Consequently they kept up their motivation, got inspired by the other groups, and also helped each other.
The second meeting in Istanbul (TR) was focusing on the development of the first two acts, on rehearsals as well as a first interaction and interplay beetween the different groups and their contributions. There was also the opportunity to put up again intercultural issues and practical theatre-acting-activities, for instance.
During the third and last meeting in Tordera (ES), all the acts were rehearsed to be finally performed. Besides, the final act was composed together by all participants. It was supposed to merge the acts before.
Finally, the public performance of the play was filmed for the production of a DVD that is also supposed to contain workshop-documents, a manual with recommendations for similar projects as well as a "making-of"-documentary.
This DVD is meant not only to reflect the work progress and its final result(s) but also to present stage-playing as an instrument of transnational and intercultural youth-collaboration that can bring about a better intercultural understanding.
We also hope to implement lasting partnerships that both intensify a collaboration and inspire other groups and institutions to join in or to start similar activities. Further projects and ideas have already been invisaged by some of the project-partners.
