TRADITIONAL ARCHİTECTURE AND URBANISM: CURRICULA A..
TRADITIONAL ARCHİTECTURE AND URBANISM: CURRICULA AND TRAINING COURSE DEVELOPMENT-TAUMA
Currently, some 50 % of world citizens live in cities or urban contexts and according to many researchers this figure will continue to rise in coming years. Thus people's need for living areas such as house, shopping centers, parks, work places and etc. will increase in near future. For this reason, cities are witnessing a unique period of growth that leads to a number of questions: Where will the urban centre be in the future? Where will the historic city’s borders or limits be? What is a historic centre? Which history does it refer to?For creating new living areas for people, Governments usually implement urban transformation projects all around the world. For many implementers, the aims of the urban transformation are increasing the life and health standards to create new areas for apartments; urban renovation; renewal of ancient places and etc.. But most of these urbanism applications generally damage the historical cities and these historical cities are disappearing as UNESCO declared at its last report about World’s heritage sites. The report shows that if urbanism goes on in its resent rate, we will have to show next generations the history of humanity only on the pages of the books. In the latest report of UNESCO, 9 sites in Turkey were announced as the Heritage site of the world. But the growing population and migration to the big cities are making the establishment of new living areas a necessity. Thus, in the big cities urban transformation is carried out by the municipalities. Due to the lack of scientific applications, the heritage sites are damaged. As an application site, Mardin, which is one of the abovementioned 9 heritage sites, will be a suitable place for our participants and the students with its natural, cultural and historical texture. As it is known, Mardin, with its historical and cultural texture, is one of the world heritage sites. By means of the curriculum to be developed, we are aiming to train the future’s urbanists. And we are expecting that the urbanists we graduate will get important roles in the transformation of cities. While they are working in the urban transformation, they will protect the heritage sites. The secondary aim of the project is to make a course for adults. It will give a chance to the participants to find job and it will also help the humanity to protect their history. Another aim of the project is to prepare a web site. The web site will help us in communicating the outputs of the project and with the help of daily updates the visitors will be informed about the urbanism applications. And later a department of urbanism will be founded and regular courses will be organized. Our partners are from Lithuania, Norway, Germany and Estonia.
