PROJET
TERMINÉ
The first step of the project was to conduct a needs analysis. The Draft National Youth Policy Framework for Malta was analysed and particular problems with sexual behaviours, obesity and inclusion in relation to Maltese youth were identified. The project served to understand better these problems and predominant trends within the demographic. These circumstances showed that a lot of work has to be done in order to improve the situation and more awareness had to be raised on the issues at hand.
Thus the overall aim of this project was to suggest new policies that will increase the engagement of youths in a healthier lifestyle. The objectives of this project were derived from some of the focus objectives mentioned in the EU Youth Strategy under the heading Health and Well-being; namely;
- finding new methods and tools to promote cooperation between schools, youth workers, health professionals and sports organisations;
- promoting mental and sexual health;
- preventing eating disorders; and
- promoting social inclusion through sports, physical activity and healthier lifestyles that are accessible to all.
In order to obtain this, the project consisted of five dialogue meetings that focused on the different themes. During these events, the young participants had the opportunity to learn more about the present situation in Malta. They were presented with studies from their colleagues and Government representatives. They were also encouraged and motivated to put forward their own proposals and suggestions on topics which directly affect them.
Before the activities took place a series of preparatory sessions needed to take place. First and foremost the topics to be discussed had to be chosen. Existing data and information was analysed to make sure that the topics chosen were relevant and whose discussion would be most beneficial to those participating in the events.
The five dialogue meetings took place at the University of Malta. The format of the meetings was very similar to each other and the overall aim was to engage as many stakeholders and youths necessary to make this project a fruitful one. All presentations were kept as short and direct as possible to make sure that whilst the youths received the necessary information they also would have time to discuss and make their voice heard. The meeting were kept quite informal and easy to make sure that all participants are at ease to share their ideas, views and experiences.
The events were promoted to all youths both within and outside the University of Malta aged between 18 and 30. All the five dialogue meetings were open to all, and efforts were made to attract as many students and youths, from all walks of life as possible. Our attendance was on average fifty to sixty youths per session. Our activities generally have always attracted large audiences of youth members and university students alike.
All the information gathered from the dialogue meetings and from previous studies conducted was collected into a Policy Paper. This policy paper, based on our findings and feedback obtained, calls for changes made at both a governmental level, through legislation, and at an educational level, aimed both at youths and even at their caregivers. The document also calls for updated statistical information in these fields and above all, cooperation between these institutions to ensure that change is actually implemented.
