One of the main objectives of an Inclusive School consists of ensuring students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) an active participation in the regular education and in the common activities of the class according to their abilities and with the adequate support of all the educational community. In 2014 the European Commission recommended (1) that the training of teachers, in what concerns to professional development, should focus more on the use of ICT in the classroom and the skills needed to teach students with special needs. Taking into account: the work that the Agrupamento de Escolas of Fornos de Algodres (AEFA) has been carrying out, with the support of various partners, in particular those based where the school is located; the interest of a multifaceted group of ten people, from the director, intermediate directors, heads of department, classroom teachers teaching in the regular system with SEN students, special education teachers, members of the Psychology and Guidance Services (SPO) and technicians from a Social Solidarity Institution (IPSS) with extensive experience working with students with special needs; that Erasmus+ provides grants for teachers’ exchange in order to improve their professional development allowing participants to exchange ideas with their peers across Europe, through the e-Twinning network; the AEFA has everything you need to implement the project "TODOS Cont@m" (everyone counts).
All mobility activities are properly framed in the work that the group, the school and the educational community will develop during the two years of the project, as well as its sustainability at the end of the two years. In order to emphasize the beginning of the project, it was chosen the day June 7th for its presentation to the community, through a public session with guests. This is the day in which we celebrate 21 years of the Declaration of Salamanca, keeping up the tradition of the AEFA of celebrating meaningful dates.
The development of the project will be accomplished step-by-step and will have permanent assessment, in order to allow for the integration of the goals on a daily basis in the classroom and in the practices of all collaborators. The project coordinator will maintain permanent contact with the participants, through a collaborative work platform and in face-to-face meetings, in order to plan and organise all the activities. We value the fact that all participants have participating, engaged and intellectually active attitudes, are willing to share knowledge and experiences and to present proposals for a resolution to the challenges that the project will bring.
Training in the European context begins with a country, with great emphasis on inclusive education, Denmark, and with a course, which disseminates the results of a previous project of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, through which the team will learn how to integrate resources linked to the arts and cultural sector in activities with pupils with SEN. We will expand the knowledge about the reality of the United Kingdom, with two mobility activities for courses and training events of different objectives, one linked to technologies and another with the goal of studying the educational system of the country which in January 2015 published legislation that allows to extend the education of the young people with SEN till they are 25. In this country the mobility of job shadowing will occur in a very special school and with which the AEFA aims to build a network for future partnerships, in particular related to the mobility of pupils with SEN. With the latest mobility to Finland, we intend to obtain more knowledge in the field of inclusion of SEN pupils in Europe and create the basis for the international seminar to be held at the end of the project, as well as the course to be made available to European schools.
Guided by the UNICEF challenge for 2015, to mark 25 years of the "Convention on the Rights of the Child", adopted by the United Nations General Assembly - may ALL find ways to "reinvent" the future of children - the AEFA wants to reinvent itself in order to contribute to a better future for children with SEN.
We are convinced that, at the end of the two years the project "TODOS Cont@m", with the team training mobility financed by Erasmus+ to a group that will serve as the "oil slick" to disseminate the training, everyone (students, teachers, not teachers, school board, parents, tutors and all school community) will have contributed to help the AEFA become and remain as a benchmark of good practice of inclusive school both in the local context and the regional, national and European ones. May all the students with SEN that attend the AEFA be integrated properly in society and in the job market, whether in Fornos de Algodres, district of Guarda, in the Centre region, in Portugal, in Europe or in the world.
