The LNG in Baltic Sea Ports project is investigating the possibilities for creating a liquefied natural gas (LNG) small scale infrastructure in seven Baltic Sea ports. The project was initiated by the Baltic Ports Organization as a response to the International Maritime Organizations impending regulation on sulphur content in ships fuel (as of January 2015). This and other regulations regarding e.g. SOx and NOx emissions, exert pressure on the maritime sector to look for an alternative to the bunker oil used today. The main aim of the project is to foster a harmonised approach towards LNG bunker filling infrastructure in the Baltic Sea area. Each of the project partners is planning the development of port infrastructure to offer LNG bunker stations to ships in the future. Achievements: State of progress on 31 December 2013:The project is on going and will be finalised in December 2014. The activity taking place is Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen-Malmo have been completed. The activities in Turku and Tallinn will most probably be completed with a limited scope due to delays in procurement and other administrative reasons.
