To create a centre for knowledge and innovation in the field of maritime safety and security (Baltic Maritime Science Park)

The project aims to increase knowledge transfer between different groups of stakeholders in the field of maritime safety and security. The ambition is to make better use of the results and recommendations of completed, ongoing and upcoming projects in the field, and thereby stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, and to create new ideas and products in the Baltic Sea region. This will be done by facilitating long-term cooperation between different groups of stakeholders and projects in the field of maritime safety and security (Baltic Maritime Science Park project). The main objectives of the project are to:1. Launch and develop a website with at least 6 thematic forums2. Connect series of thematic seminars/workshops to each online forum3. Gather 90 membership organizations by the end of 20144. Establish at least 5 nodes around the Baltic Sea Region5. Initiate 20 transnational R&D-projects connected to the online forums6. Stimulate the development of 20 innovations7. Transform these innovations into at least 10 business concepts8. Initiate 5 strategic projects (such as Interreg etc.) Achievements: State of playPresently, the founding organizations are preparing the launch of BMSP. The web based forums are under development and new partners/members are continuously connected to the initiative.Two forums are initially launched:1. Oil Spill Forum – A forum where results from transnational projects and interregional cooperations will be clustered and connected to academia and the industry. The forum will be moderated by the World Maritime University and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. Transnational projects to focus on initially are Brisk, Ensaco, Oil Risk and Baltic Master 2.2. Maritime Science Forum – A forum moderated by Kalmar Maritime Academy which gathers Naval Academies and Maritime Universities around the BSR for the joint planning of research as well as training and education. The thematic focus will be on the human factor and organisational culture connected to shipping.Next stepsBMSP will grow continuously both when it comes to the number of thematic forums and members/partners. Initially, the main focus will be put on developing the thematic content and venues of BMSP. During 2012 the goal is to launch 1-2 more forums in addition to the ones mentioned above:• Marine Spatial Planning Forum – A forum on the development of educational programmes in the Baltic Sea Region on maritime spatial planning and integrated coastal zone management. Research projects will be planned and connections to the industry will be made. Blekinge Institute of Technology will be the moderator of this forum with support from other organisations.• Maritime Domain Awareness Forum – A forum which concludes ongoing research and cooperations on maritime traffic surveillance and deviation detection, etc. Results will be matched with businesses and the industry. Blekinge Institute of Technology will be the moderator of this forum with support from other organisations.Apart from establishing the Swedish node in BMSP, at least two more nodes will be established during 2012. Becoming a node includes gathering a local partnership consisting of Public Authorities, Academia, the Industry and possibly also the Civil Sector. Each node needs to moderate thematic forums in cooperation with other members/partners of BMSP.Discussions are ongoing with possible members/partners in Poland and Germany about establishing nodes. Moreover, contacts have been made with organizations in Finland, Estonia, Norway and Russia.
