To Be on The Other Side
Date du début: 1 août 2016, Date de fin: 28 févr. 2017 PROJET  TERMINÉ

During 12 days, 35 participants aged between 16 and 22 and from Portugal, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Germany and Poland will met in Cascais, Portugal to participate in a Youth Exchange. The project "To Be on the Other Side" deals with the present crisis affecting the Syrian refugees, who have been victims of the civil war since 2011. This problem has received a great amount of media coverage and is becoming increasingly a social and political concern in Europe. Only now have our leaders started to look for a collective solution, still divided between courage and fear.We have witnessed a diversity of opinions, judgments, acts of solidarity and also hate speech. And even though some people are quite informed about this issue and are using this information to guide their actions and attitudes, others unfortunately are not aware of the real problem and its implications, reacting therefore sometimes with ignorance. We believe that is time to come together in order to transmit values such as respect for difference, human rights and human dignity, solidarity and cooperation and also to contribute to a more informed, participatory and united society which fights prejudices and inequalities. (It's time to remember the founding principles of the European Union.)To achieve this it is essential to be well informed and to understand what is happening, so that one can develop not only a more accurate critical spirit but also feelings and attitudes of mutual support, cooperation and tolerance. Youngsters will experience through theater what it feels like to be on "the other side", to be in the skin of refugees. Together as a group they can critically discuss what are the effects of “being a refugee” in one’s life and in the end of the exchange they will organize a theater performance in Cascais for the local community addressing these issues.Theater will be a big part of the exchange, and the program will also be filled with moments that stimulate reflection on issuesrelated to cooperation, solidarity and interculturality. Main methods are speeches from guests, group dynamics, workshops andgroup discussions.
