The Icelandic horse is not only found it it´s country of origin, but is increasingly popular in Europe and throughout the world and is the center of many different activities. There is riding, championships and tournaments, breeding, taming, judging, welfare and history, and followers are both young and old. The international interest in the Icelandic horse breed is unique and it continues to grow. This brings people together and there is a growing collaboration and community around the Icelandic horse, throughout Europe.
The project was a contribution to strengthen this connection and to enhance learning and exchange of knowledge about the Icelandic horse. A group of 12 German horse riders, at the age range of 12 - 21, visited Iceland, with 3 adult leaders and one parent. In Iceland, they were greeted by 15 peers, same age, 2 leaders and 2 parents. A total of 35 participants. The journey took place from 14 - 20th of July 2015.
Over the course of one week the group experienced horse riding and a longer riding journey. The German participants lived with local families, learned through study and experience and reported back each day. They deepened their connection with the horse, with Icelandic nature, with each other and with themselves.
In the long run they will be better equipped as horse riders, and for whatever field they choose, regarding the Icelandic horse. Also they will be better prepared to take over the European collaboration, from the older generation, when the time comes.
The project was run by two regional associations of horse clubs, who both take great pride in their youth programs. With the project they are strengthening their collaboration and building a stronger foundation for youth exchange in the future.
The project is based on the fact, that the Icelandic horse unites, beyond countries and age. It is a symbol of unity for thousands of people throughout Europe and all over the world.
