THE EXPRESSIVE APPROACH IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING: DRAMA AND ICT IN CLIL MODULES

Our organization is an “ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO” or else a state-run school catering for pre-primary pupils (aged 3 to 5), primary pupils (aged 5 to 10) and middle school students (aged 11 to 13).
Within the primary school segment, the need to improve foreign languages teaching competences with regard to the employment of new methodologies has emerged strongly amongst our teaching staff as a way to enhance the on-going teaching and learning experience of both teachers and pupils in our school.
To address these needs, our school has decided to send over the summer a number of four primary school teachers to various two-week training courses. The selected teachers needed to practice and refine their English language proficiency skills and wanted to improve their understanding of the new methodologies in language teaching towards a more creative and student-centered method.
The two-week courses, focused respectively on CLIL methodology, on the use of drama for teaching and learning English, on the student - centered teaching and “learning by doing approaches”. These courses enabled the participant teachers to establish partnership projects with other European teachers that, in turn, fostered meaningful use of the foreign language for intercultural exchanges and boosted ICT skills among the teaching staff and the pupils.
The school mobility project had direct and indirect impacts on both the individual participants and the school as a whole.
On the one hand, it contributed to the participants’ personal language development and it refined their teaching methodology and techniques. On the other hand, it made them more inter-culturally aware and it fostered ICT-based teaching and learning through the establishing of eTwinning project.
On a broader context, it is having the cascading effect of benefiting the school staff at large allowing to transferring the new competences by means of in-house seminars and workshops. It has enhanced the pupils learning experience through a more student-centered approach and by increasing pupils’ motivation in learning foreign languages as key to access foreign cultures. The mobility project has had an impact on the way our organization has perceived by the parents and the local community as an innovative learning center and a place for international intercultural exchange.
Eventually the project has been an important occasion to improve the school collaboration with institutions, in particular with Ufficio Scolastico Regionale and the University of Bologna and Reggio Emilia for the organization of seminars about new methodologies for the teaching and learning of English in the infant, primary and secondary schools.
These workshops have been targeted both teachers and students and proposed theories and practices regarding CLIL topics, drama, ICT and creative methodologies.
