The EU Environmental Policy and Its Implications for China

European Union (EU) has been playing a leading role in environmental protection and global governance on global climate change. The environmental policy in EU has been parts of the EU's guiding common policies. In terms of environmental protection, Countries around the world could learn from EU's experience in environmental protection policy and the effort against global climate change. Over the past decades, Chinese economy has been growing faster than any other countries, but China also experienced faster increase in Carbon emissions and faster environmental degradation. Deteriorating ecological environment, accompanying thirty years of rapid economic growth, has become one of the most important issues for the public. Undoubtedly, China can learn from the EU's environmental and climate governance experience.The main objective of this project is to: a) study EU’s environmental policy and governance in global climate changes by combining economics, political science, law and public policy, b) launch new courses and update existing curricula and teaching materials; c) entitle Chinese students and scholars more comprehensive and deeper understanding of the evolution of EU environmental policy and global climate change governance policy; d) promote the cooperation between the EU and China on climate and environmental governance.As an important part of European Integration Study course series at Sichuan University, there are five priorities in the proposed project: a)Relations between the European economic integration and the EU regional development; b) Economic functions and political functions of regional policy to both the EU and China; c) Eco-environmental protection in the development of the backward areas, especially the poor areas with a harsh environment and fragile ecology; d) Protection of the historical and cultural heritage in the minority regions experiencing economic development; e)Diversification of the economic activities in rural areas.
