Since 2008-09 the INS Alexandre Satorras has been carrying out several programmes in order to improve the school results as well as the teaching processes. One of the main educational concerns was about how to deal with students diversity and specially with the inclusion paradigm. Bearing all that in mind the school staff issued a challenge to enhance the students learning of the English Language and other subjects. It is then when the CLIL programme called ‘Keep it up in English!’ was born within the School Autonomous Plan. So far this programme has been and is still very successful and promising.
At the beginning the programme was led by 2 teachers and the other subject was Natural Science. Right now, there is a team of 11 teachers and the other subjects taught through the English language are Natural Science, Technology and Physical Education. It seemed that the school should also provide these teachers with sound training courses to get better at planning and performing in the classroom CLIL sessions. The school, then, applied for an Erasmus+ funding for a 2 years period and it was accepted. Thanks to this, 9 teachers (3 Natural Science teachers, 2 Technology teachers, 1 P.E. teacher and 3 English language teachers) have taken part in 2 activities: English language and CLIL training courses and ‘Job Shadowing’ programmes.
The participant teachers in these language and CLIL training courses were chosen according to their personal motivation and interests and to the school CLIL programme and teaching goals. A suitable English language level was also required to attend these courses.
On the other hand, there were 4 teachers involved in the ‘Job Shadowing’ activities. The places were chosen according to pedagogically innovative approaches. Two of them went to a Dutch school (in Wieringerwerf). It is an ELOS school having as a main goal to provide their students a european competence. Another teacher went to a school in Palermo (Italy), with a very strong scientist orientation. And finally, another teacher went to Bath (UK) to attend a teachers course to get first hand experience of schools in England and contact with experienced teachers in the UK. This last place was chosen because the Devon Studio School (focusing on promoting careers in the Social, Early Years and Health care Sectors) failed to fulfill the common agreement and gave up at the very last moment.
All in all, this training has both enhanced the English language teachers’ and the students’ competence. Moreover, it has also specially enriched the Technology and Natural Science teaching methodologies.
