The Accessible City. Tourism for all (Tactall)

This ToI proposal addresses the needs of people with functional diversity (those with temporary or permanent mobility, sensorial, intelectual or organical difficulties) in order to promote the universal accessibility. EU policy focuses on the needs of all citizens to participate in all aspects of life – cultural, social, economic and leisure-. A key emphasis is providing equality of opportunity for all. This project focuses on these needs within the tourism sector – hospitality, hotel, catering, service, transport and support services-. Tourism is a major economic driver in Europe – given its rich cultural diversity and heritage-. The sector is growing and within that the number of visits and travels by those suffering from temporary or permanent disability, the elderly and those with limited mobility is increasing. By 2020 some 20% of the EU population will fall within this category.Current Vocational training in Tourism in Europe does not recognise the impact or implications of this sector of society and the rights of tourism for all. This project will build on the experience and expert currently being undertaken to create ‘the Accessible City’ in San Sebastian, España. It aims to ensure training and continuing professional development of professionals, employees and enterprises is geared to raise the awareness and provide skills to those working in and supporting the hospitality, service and tourism sectors thus delivering ‘Tourism for All’. The Tourism sector must adapt and redress the lack of access, improve facilities and raise the skills of those in the sector.
