TERMINAL CROSSBREEDING OF BELGIAN BLUE WITH HOLSTEIN (CTBBH)
Date du début: 31 déc. 2007, Date de fin: 29 juin 2012 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Following the testing started under INTERREG III in dairy-beef farms in France and Belgium, the second phase of the projects aims at assessing and identifying Blanc-Bleu bulls in the cross-border area that are geneticallysuited for cross-breeding. Indeed, both regions are complementary in terms of cross-breeding races: France contributes the necessary cows for testing, while Belgium provides the semen doses for artificial insemination. To objectify the advantages of the cross-bred Blanc-Bleu calves compared to Holstein calves in terms of fat, carcass and meat quality, their performance is monitored. Finally, an economic study confirms the profitability of cross-breeding Blanc-Bleu with Holstein cows in both cross-border regions. Achievements: End of project results:- Set up of a common test programme to index (genetic evaluation) 54 bulls from 18,089 test inseminations and 4,405 monitored calves.- Annual publication of tested bull indexes for the farmers.- Monitoring of 3 samples on 10 Holstein calve carcasses and 10 cross-bred calve carcasses to compare the beef production properties of the cross-bred Blanc Bleu x Holstein products.- Computerisation of the recorded data through 2 encoded internet interfaces and creation of a web interface to collect the data from the cross-border regions.- Economic profitability study of the Blanc Bleu x Holstein cross-breeding.- 909 farms made aware of the project.
