Having implemented a CLIL program in our school (Belgium) we have soon come to realized that students became more and more
passive. Some of them seem to believe that being in a CLIL/ immersion program will insure them the learning of a language. However a language can only be assimilated if the learner commit to put effort in learning. Mastering a language takes time and personal investment. We noticed that students learning curves wasn't increasing and stagnating. The students didn't see the point in involving themselves in their lessons. We extended our findings and realized that this was also true in non- CLIL programs. It appears that teenagers immersed in technology and fast moving world do not, for most of them, understand the need to invest themselves. We came to question our teaching methods and the motivation of our students to learn. This is how we decided to linger the gap between "old-fashion" teaching methods and the needs of todays' students.
The objectives of the project are to let the main actors of our education system, as to know teenagers, tell us their motivations and their needs. Following that, this project hopes to answer their needs by letting them show their teachers, mentors and parents methods that they believe will work. Methods that will trigger their motivation. The knowledge given to them by a teacher, educator parent can be found on the internet. Everything can be found on the internet. The question of this project is how could teenagers' tutors become their role-model and give them inspiration and enhance their motivation to learn.
The participants of this project will be 13 to 14 years old at the beginning of the project. The group will be mixed genders. Most of participants are attending at least half of their curriculum in CLIL program where they are taught various subjects in English. The rest of their lesson are taught to them in their native language ( French/ Czech).
As the title of this project reads, our activities will evolve around peers teaching peers. Along this project, the students will have the opportunity to give their opinion, to summarize their ideas, to exchange their findings, to work on oral presentation, to meet other cultures, to give advices and types on their learning methods and to use new technology with the creation of an ebook. All these activities will enhance students knowledge on different subject but also bring a new studying and learning perspective. Notwithstanding, Students will develop transferable skills which they will need at school but also later in their life. They will develop their analytical, presentation, research, TIC skills.
The methodology to be used in this project is encouraging students to express their opinion. We will give them the confidence to express in a clear manner their opinions. More importantly, we will ask them to be the actor of their learning. We will swap a passive behavior toward an active one. Following the say "if you don't know it, then teach it", the method will be based on self-study guided by teachers.
The result of such a method will be to encourage teens in taking hold of their knowledge, trigger their curiosity and being eager to know more. The final results of this project will be the development of new innovative methods of teaching. These methods will be the ones suggested by the students. Another result will be giving tips for students studying in CLIL program but also learning in traditional program. Notably, parents will be able to have a better understanding of their teenagers by reading our booklet/ guidelines with our findings on learning models developed by our students. Additionally, the expected result is also to involve students as well as parents in the academic life.
In the longer term, we hope that some of the methods presented in our project will be put into practice in both of our schools but might interest other education organization. We will design entire modules/ lessons using the methods suggested bystudents. The methods mentioned in this project will give ideas to other school around Europe. It will also show cultural differences in learning and teaching. It will be a real benefit for the education system. Schools interested in implementing a CLIL program will have some concrete findings, a real case study to reflect on. Especially that in this project , CLIL students will be talking about their difficulties and success over these programs.
Beyond the insight of CLIL program, the project will benefit in general to an evolution of "old fashion" teaching methods which doesn't often seem to comply to today's generation of teens.
