TEDDY Teacher European Development Designed for Youngsters

TEDDY (Teacher European Development Designed for Youngsters) is a two-year Erasmus Plus European Project - Key Action 1 which has been designed in order to improve teaching competences, broaden the knowledge and understanding of European education policies and school systems, sustain growth and increase cooperation at international level for our institution, the “Istituto Comprensivo di Codroipo” (Italy). From the very beginning our purpose was to create a shared basic training aimed at developing a stronger sense of belonging. This was considered crucial in a big new institute such as ours with over 1,850 pupils, where thirteen schools, from primary to secondary ones, are found in a large territory situated in the north-east of Italy, an area where different languages and communities have been coexisting for a long time. Such prerequisite was therefore identified essential to future European projects, which will aim at creating partnerships and collaborations. Our project has involved teachers of three different school levels (kindergarten, primary and secondary) and members of staff who have had the opportunity to take part in training sessions in the UK. For this purpose, tailor-made training sessions have been designed in order to improve each participant's cultural, educational and linguistic competences with the collaboration of two institutes in the United Kingdom: Anglolang Academy of English in Scarborough (England) and International Study Programmes in Dunfermline (Scotland). Our courses were flexible, responding to the needs of groups with different working language competences and included traditional lessons, workshops, school visits, lesson observations, job shadowing, talks to school leaders and practicioners, communicative activities, micro lesson preparations, language development and guided tours of places of cultural and historical interest so that participants could gain the maximum benefit from their stay in the UK. Each training session was preceded by preparation activities through blended-learning and we have been keeping in close touch with course tutors as the courses developed. Among the most important topics were education systems, teaching methodologies, school curricula, student assessment and school evaluation, cultural awareness and the development of the European key competences. Meanwhile we also had many opportunities to explore the use of ICT in classrooms, classroom management, best practices and how to deal with students with special educational needs. Thanks to the warm hospitality and willingness to cooperate of Dunfermline High School and Crossgates Primary School, and a good financial management we have also been able to organise some extra job shadowing activity periods, which granted us the chance to increase the number of total mobilities and experience and work in schools different than ours and which provided considerable added value to the whole project. It was a unique opportunity to get to know the English and Scottish education system from the inside and to dialogue with European colleagues and all this has led to the acquisition of new professional competences, which are to be immediately applied in each school. Although there is still room for improvement TEDDY has provided staff and educators with the necessary professional development in order to operate and cooperate at a European level. Families and their representatives have shown great interest and awareness regarding the European Programme Erasmus Plus and the need to teach their children the necessary competences to be active European citizens. The final outcome has been highly positive and many participants have become members of work teams as active members or staff and project coordinators. Those who have moved to other schools have become ambassadors of the project itself and the European values of freedom, citizenship,cooperation and .growth through education As regards dissemination a number of activities have been organised and are currently ongoing and they include presentations, sharing experiences and resources within and outside our institution and a new network, comprising schools that have taken part in European projects and the Regional Board of Education, has recently been created for the dissemination of European culture. TEDDY has been a successful project and it has taught us a lot, well exceeding our expectations
