In Gascoigne Primary school, we have been introducing the French curriculum across key stage 2 over a number of years. We firmly believe that learning a language is an important life skill so with that in mind, is our aim to deliver high quality French lessons to the children in this school. We believe the best way to do this is to send teachers on a course in a French speaking community. Therefore we desire to sent two teachers on a week long course in Lille , France, as organised by the course provider LEAP. The teachers are working in years 3 and 4 and one has some school French but would like to be more accurate in terms of her pronunciation while the other teacher was schooled in a different country, where French was not taught. Both teachers are really motivated about attending this course, seeing it as a valuable opportunity for their own professional development.
We have selected this particular course as we have had teachers, from the school, attend a similar language course (in France and Spain) and they have returned full of enthusiasm and with increased confidence. We are aware that the course will be delivered by experienced language teachers and as it will be a full immersion experience, the teachers will experience high quality, appropriately pitched lessons within a rich cultural context. The course also encourages the use of creative teaching processes, including the use of ICT in language teaching. Significantly as part of the course, teachers will get to spend time in a French primary school so we fervently hope that a link can be established with a school there, making our school more international. The aim of sending teachers on this course is so they return with increased knowledge of the language and high levels of confidence in delivering lessons. This would apply directly to their own classes but also following the course, we plan for the teachers involved to share their learning through KS2 meetings with other teachers and also in an assembly context, to share the experience with the children.
As a school, we are striving to empower teachers to be able to confidently deliver French lessons, as specified in the new curriculum. We feel the best way to achieve this is by teachers being able to study the language in the country, in which it is spoken. We feel the participants of the course will be able, on their return, to share their knowledge, therefore equipping other teachers to be better prepared to teach a language. Most importantly we know this course will have real benefits for the children in our classes, who deserve good quality lessons, delivered confidently.
