Tackling Radicalism through Active Citizenship of Europe in Schools
Date du début: 1 sept. 2016, Date de fin: 31 août 2018 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Radicalization is one of the most worrying contemporary phenomena (OSCE 2015a). It is based on a series of global, sociological and political factors, whereas its causes may be socio-economic, ideological, personal and psychological (EPRS 2015; EP 2015). Although not uniformly defined (see Reinares et al. 2008), radicalization as the phenomenon when people embrace opinions, views and ideas which could lead to violent extremism (COM/2005/0313) is back on the European political agenda (Bigo et al. 2014; EPRS 2015) with the recent terrorist attacks in Europe (e.g. Charlie Hebdo massacre, November Paris attacks). trACES addresses the problem of youth radicalization as young people proved to be particularly vulnerable to it (COM/2013/0941; OSCE 2013). Radicalization among youth can and should be prevented, starting at an early age, in formal schools settings (OSCE 2013). trACES aims to prepare an EU citizenship education formal and non-formal curricula, designed to combat youth radicalization. trACES will design a blended learning toolkit for teaching and learning (EU) citizenship, which is based on a methodology developed under our ACES project (ACES - 542835-LLP-1-2013-1-AJM-ICS), already labelled as SUCCESS STORY by the EC. This innovative methodology will be adopted to construct a toolkit (entailing e-books; MOOCs, quiz tests, video and audio material, additional sources) with newly-designed Anti-Radicalization curricula for primary schools, general secondary and VET schools, and youth organizations. Since Slovene educational system lacks appropriate educational tools for teaching (EU) citizenship (Zimšek and Deželan 2013), we plan to use and promote this toolkit in order to foster active citizenship by specifically focusing on inclusion and prevention of radicalization. Special seminars for teachers and other educators shall equip them with competences and methods needed to make them aware of radicalization (see RAN 2016) and how to prevent it.
