Public Secondary School No. 9 in Bialystok is a public school located in the city with a population of 300000. The school has 575 students and 56 teachers. Most students come from the wealthy families. Several students from Dagestan and Chechnya study in the school. Pupils achieve high secondary school examination results, and they take part in numerous school and interschool competitions . The school cooperates with many institutions in the local community to create the opportunity for students' comprehensive development.
The objectives of this project are focused on the needs of the school and aim at improving the language competence in the field of English and Spanish among the staff, acquiring new tools and methods of teaching , the acquisition of new skills in the use of modern ICT, acquiring and developing management skills in running international projects. Another goal is to promote language learning among young people and their parents, especially those threatened by unemployment.
The participation of 10 teachers in language and methodology courses in English and Spanish is planned in the project "School open to Europe ". The selected teachers represent the tutors of Mathematics, English , Physics , Spanish , History, Civics, Education for security and information technology . It is a choice, which will provide a new and better co-operation of teachers of different subjects in achieving the learning objectives.
Foreign language teachers are planning to take methodology courses to acquire new methods of teaching and learning. The selection of courses was determined by the presence of studies on the use of new information and communication technologies, in order to use them during language classes and after-school activities.
Those teachers whose knowledge is inadequate to communicate freely, chose the general courses in English and Spanish. Raising or acquiring communication skills in English and Spanish will allow more teachers to coordinate activities requiring the use of a foreign language, and thus will allow to involve more students in school activities . Establishing new contacts with people from other countries and extending them to the students will facilitate the the future project actions and development of our school.
The courses our school teachers are going to take will have long-lasting effects on themselves mainly but also on school, students, other school workers, students’ parents and local area. We intend to share the project results and knowledge we gain with all the groups mentioned above. We are also going to organize lessons for teachers in our school and workshops for teachers from other schools in order to present new methods we have learnt. Thus we also widen educational offer of our school through organizing extra afterschool activities, school competitions and other actions we will arrange with the youngsters. The Internet, Facebook, eTwinnig, local magazine for teachers will also be our tools to share our experience. In addition we will organize culture activities for children in local community centres and libraries.
Due to the experience we acquire and aims of project we achieve our school will improve and develop in the future. The raising language competences of science, information technology, history, civics, education for safety teachers will enable us to implement the idea of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in our school. We intend to arrange a set of lessons connected with cultural diversities.
We hope courses and workshops abroad will soon become a standard in our school and a milestone in or school development. This mobility is the first step to encourage other teachers to educate themselves all their lives. Equipped with practical knowledge of using ICT in classroom will enable teachers to organize additional activities dedicated to children with special educational needs.
By dint of our teachers’ departure for the courses abroad the school will be perceived more prestigious, modern, looking for new teaching and learning methods. The school staff will be seen as the group constantly improving language competence, using new tools in teaching process, being amenable to new technologies and ready to cooperate with other schools at international level. Our participation in the project will boost the idea of international cooperation in the local market and strengthen collaboration among teachers through reciprocal teaching and exchange of good practice. Achieving all those goals is possible only due to our teachers’ departures abroad.
