The whole period of the programme with preparation and dissemination takes 12 months, of which the students spend 5 months abroad. (Iceland: 8 students, United Kingdom: 7 students, Spain: 6 students, Sweden, Italy: 5, Germany, Norway: 4, Belgium, Finland 3, France, Turkey, Latvia:; altogether 48 students. The programme organiser partners, receiving and sending establishments are significant secondary schools, colleges from the given countries. (see detailed description: C.2) Ninukot from Iceland is the only partner institution which is an exception and functions as an agency. The receiving partners choose the work placements, restaurants, hotels in a way that they ensure the program to be carried out successfully. They sign contracts with the work placements and during the placement in industry, they check whether all the requirements, listed in the contract, are met along whit the development of the students. The schools and work placements - taking part in the programme - have been working together in Leonardo, Socrates and other international projects for several years. This fact helps the preparatory, monitoring and dissemination activity to a great extent. The aims of the project are to improve the beneficiaries’ second language knowledge and to enable them to use technical terminology with ease. Also, to satisfy the needs of the beneficiaries, that is, to make them competitive on the labour market, to gain industrial experience, self confidence and maturity to obtain employment outside the familiar surroundings, to make them acquainted with the specialities of the EU concerning carreer, employment and profession. The beneficiaries are secondary and vocational school students (see detailed description in F). Steps of the programme: discussing and agreeing upon the conditions and circumstances, recruiting beneficiaries on the basis of their applications, preparation at the sending school, travelling, preparation at the receiving school, work placement, travelling back home, evaluation and dissemination. The tutorial and monitoring process runs parallel with the programme, therefore the opportunity is given to intervene whenever it is required. The aim of the preparation period at the sending school is to provide the beneficiaries with the chance to improve their language and professional skills, needed during the work placement. The students get acquainted with the essence and rules of the programme and the laws applicable to the employees in the receiving country. Furthermore a programme is provided which helps students to adapt themselves to the local surroundings. Before their journey, they take part in a ‘self knowledge’ and personality improvement training. The placement abroad has 2 parts, first the students take part in a 4-week cultural and language course at the receiving school. This course is followed by a 4-month work placement. The students write a diary, in which they describe their own experiences also the evaluation of the managers at the work placement is included. The beneficiaries also get an evaluation sheet as well in which they can evaluate the programme on the basis of given guidelines. The annual meeting of the coordinators and the principals of the partaking schools (held in Iceland, see minutes enclosed) is part of the programme, where the necessary modifications are carried out required by the principles of quality assurance. The contract, content of letters of intent and tasks of the following year are agreed upon. The skills and knowledge acquired during the programme are acknowledged on the one hand by certificates, diplomas and reference letters issued by the receiving partner and the work placement and on the other hand, by accepting placement abroad as professional practice on the part of the sending partner. The expected results of the programme is that students are able to make decisions on their own, to make soups alone, they know the preparation methods of seafood, specialties of the receiving country (for example, pizza, fish and chips), they know how to set the table on their own, how to take orders, apply different serving methods, how to deal with bills. They are able to use technical terminology and they are open towards other cultures. In the short run, the result of the project is that students achieve better scores at their exams, in the long run, they find jobs on the labour market more easily, also, their employer abroad may offer them a full-time job.
