This project is a mobility project for technical and vocational education staff and its aim is to gain knowledge of work specifics of a similar group of professionals in Spain. During the job-shadowing visit in Spanish Valencia its participants got to know the Spanish vocational education system and in particular methods of teaching, curricula, ways of organising internships, examination standards as well as the rules of cooperation with employers. The major objective of the project is to increase the knowledge and competence of our staff and consequently enhance competitiveness of our graduates on the domestic and European labour market.
The participants of the project were 10 experienced teachers of vocational subjects in the field of economics and gastronomy as well as language teachers instructing the language of economics and gastronomy. All of them have at least five years' experience and significant achievements.
This mobility programme was accomplished from 2nd of June, 2015 till 6th of June, 2015. After the welcome meeting at the host institution office, where the programme of the visit was discussed and the visited area was characterised, the participants went on a guided tour of the town center and saw the main sights. The succeeding days were filled with visits at the following schools and educational institutions:
- Conselleria Centro de Cualificaciones - the regional qualification centre - a division of the education department in Valencia responsible for implementing tourism policy and educating in all the professions in the sector of tourism. After the lecture on the centre activity, the discussion on its operation, teaching programmes, methods of recruitment and examining, the participants visited gastronomy classrooms and the lecture room where courses are held.
- Escuela Eneldo - private school of cooking - after the introduction and questions on the operation of the school, the participants watched the class of cooking for five students.
Complejo Educativo Cheste - the largest public technical school in the region offering education for about 2300 students and employing 170 teachers, it specializes in gastronomy and catering. After visits in gastronomy classrooms, numerous discussions with teachers, visits in classrooms and teacher's room, the participants of the project took part in the training on the system of education in Spain including vocational education. The training was carried out by the teachers of the school.
- Centro De Formacion Altaviana - private secondary school operating on the rights of public school specializing in gastronomy, catering and hotel industry. The group of participants was shown around by the deputy headmaster and had a chance to learn about the operation of the school, ways of financing, curricula, methods of recruitment, student assessment and promotion, school participation in EU programs and teachers' conditions of employment. There was time for a large number of questions concerning the school and the Spanish system of education in general.
The participants of the project took part in the night of flamenco which is popular in the region of Valencia, did sightseeing of the town and saw its main attractions like: The Art Museum, The Town of Art and Science including the largest aquarium in Europe, historic churches and buildings.
Since all the tasks were performed together, the coordinator of the project monitored participants' progress on a regular basis through observation and discussions summarizing each day of the visit.
The job-shadowing visit considerably increased participants' knowledge, competence and professional experience as well as their familiarity with the culture of the visited region and language skills in English and Spanish. The group of teachers confronted Spanish and Polish vocational education systems, particularly curricula and methods of teaching. New experience is used in teaching gastronomic subjects, e.g. Spanish and Valencian recipes, teaching aids seen in the schools of Valencia, while new knowledge and competence have been delivered to students.
Experience and impressions from the visit have been shared to the school and local community in a multimedia presentation of the project, photo presentation in the main school hall, photo album and articles in the local press as well as school website. The project provides huge encouragement to take opportunities given by the EU programs. It's also a great lesson of opening for European cultures, tolerance for other traditions, ideas, and a motivation to improve foreign language skills. The beneficiary is planning to participate in other projects designed for educational staff, possibly of different profile.
