Syrian refugees support (Jordan)
Date du début: 1 août 2014, Date de fin: 31 déc. 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

During the project, the volunteer went to Al Mafraq, a city in Northern Jordan, to support a church that is cooperating with many NGO’s in its aid to Syrian refugees. The project consists of different aspects: It aims to provide in the basic needs of the refugees (food, blankets, mattresses…) and to give psychosocial support by listening to the stories of the refugees, helping them to process the hard times and encouraging them. Furthermore, the project addresses a major issue on the level of children’s rights: it seeks to give education to the Syrian children who have lost access to it by having to flee. During this project the volunteer taught them English. She also gave English classes to adults. Moreover, the project seeks to strengthen the self-worth of children and give the possibility to make fun and make new friends by organizing special events and activities (e.g. handicrafts). Since 2011, there has been an ongoing conflict in Syria. It has led to the fled of many citizens to countries abroad in search for a shelter. Many of the refugees have gone to Jordan. In Jordan, there are several initiatives and organizations which aim to support the refugees. During this project, the volunteer (one participant) seek to support the workers of one of these organizations. The project seeks to address the major issues of the Syrian refugees: basic needs, psychosocial support and education. It does so by providing food, mattresses and blankets to the refugees, by weekly paying home visits to listen to their stories, talking to the refugees and encouraging them. It also provides education to the children and seeks to provide the adults with English classes. Further, it organizes special activities for children so that they can have fun again, meet new people and make new friends. The education for children happens according to the Montessori-style for primary education. Manuals to support a child-focused educational approach are used. The basic needs such as food and blankets are transported with trucks, and are directly delivered at the houses of the refugees. This way, the workers respect the dignity of the refugees and they can also give psychosocial support by talking and encouraging them. The project creates a bigger solidarity with people in need and it opened the eyes of the volunteer to see new opportunities of how the refugees can be helped. It also opened up ways for more cooperation and projects between the Middle East and Europe to support refugees/people in need. Furthermore, it enabled and is still enabling children to acquire major skills such as reading and writing and by doing so, open up more ways and prospects for their future. It helped the refugees (children and adults) to process hard times and give them more opportunities for a better future. On the long term, it created and is creating a bigger awareness about the impact of the Syrian conflict and it encouraging others to get involved in helping the (Syrian) refugees by using their own talents.
