The project of Lyseonpuiston lukio upper secondary school HEADING FOR THE FUTURE – in-service training for the school staff has been created because of the need to develop, reinforce and update multicultural skills and knowledge in the city of Rovaniemi. The employees of the city of Rovaniemi are required to have good language skills and ability to work in multicultural working communities. The participants of the project (11) represent different school subjects and school management - a fact that ensures the attainment of these skills and abilities gained in the in-service training across the whole school community, including the students and the teachers. The courses of the participants are mainly concentrated on languages, ICT in teaching, teaching outside the classroom, and also on adopting new values and attitudes. The goal of the project is to improve the language skills and the working skills in multicultural communities both among teachers and school management. In addition, the main goals of the project are to get information about different working methods in different parts of Europe and to network with people from different countries. It is also important to achieve knowledge about the challenges that multicultural awareness brings to schools. The results of our project HEADING FOR THE FUTURE can also be seen in the changes that are being made in the national curricula. As a result of the project the teachers will not be afraid to use new teaching materials and different working methods. In addition, the values, the goals, and the vision will become clearer. In our school we will have an opportunity to reflect on the multicultural world, learn to cooperate with other people and be active together in the international world of everyday life. The staff is committed to developing and maintaining international awareness. In the future there will be more and more students and staff members joining international projects either physically or virtually, and there should be equal rights to do that. Even though it is not possible to send everybody abroad, we aim to provide learning experiences in meeting and understanding different cultures. Also transcultural interaction plays an important part in the everyday life of our school. The objectives of growing and maturing as a person are dealt with in all subjects and school culture which stresses the physical, mental and social growth of a student as well as the development of communality based on equality and tolerance.
