The FENNREHAB project wishes to realize the environmental rehabilitation of cross-border protected wetlands through the naturalization of water buffalos (bubalus bubalus). Through that, the project treats endangered saline habitats in Hungary, and fragile riverside floodplains in Romania. The water buffalo is able to clean wet areas, of which local endemic and other domesticated animals are not capable. Also, invasive plant species suppressing and harming the local elements of flora and fauna form water buffalo’s primary diet thus it can be efficiently "used" for the recovery of the protected biotopes’ ecological balance, and the conservation of the natural condition, by minimal human intervention. Consequently, the method serves the public interest on short, medium and long terms through the reduction of unhealthy allergen invasive elements of flora, the increase of the proportion and number of native animal and plant species representing a high intrinsic value, and the eco-tourism attractions of the animal livestock.General objective of the project is the rehabilitation of protected wetlands by an innovative conservation programme. The specific objectives are linked to the following: rehabilitation of the complete territory of Lake Nagyszéksós (HU) and the designated area of Mures River (RO), the application of the rehabilitation know-how on different biotopes, expansion of buffalo farm at Lake Nagyszéksós, establishment of a new training and measuring centre, and establishment of a buffalo farm in Pecica. The target groups of the project are: nature protection organizations, experts, scientific researchers and research groups, pedagogues, local governments (those, who work mainly in the field of nature protection and other related fields), agricultural private persons and farms (those, whose aim is to disseminate the eco-effective farming forms and other environmentally friendly production methods), youth and school groups, permanent, or seasonal employees on the rehabilitation areas etc.
