The creation of the European Network Natura 2000 not only connects the member states in a common policy of nature conservation, it also raises comparable challenges concerning the implementation of different tourist utilization claims to these areas.The overall strategic objective of the S-MAN 2000 project is to develop sustainable management strategies of angling tourism in regions with a high ratio of Natura 2000 and other sensitive areas (limnic/brackish water systems) in the BSR. These strategies shall be integrated in spatial planning and regional tourist-economic development processes.The S-MAN 2000 project partnership consisted of 20 partners from 7 Baltic countries: Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and additionally from Finland and Denmark. The range of stakeholders involved non-profit / non governmental tourist organizations, regional and local authorities for protected areas, municipalities, angling associations, services and agricultural consulting societies.Ativities on the project level such as common working groups, consisted of:joint evaluations of prerequisites such as joint regional SWOT analyses and surveys among anglers.common approaches for management strategies of lakes and wetlands in an angling contextrelated overall topics such as the prevention of invasive fish and other species were dealt with.Coordinated tourist quality standards and information exchange about differing tourist conditions and development possibilitiesInformation and education activities as well as capacity building for project partners and the production of a bilingual Natura 2000 information and practice brochure for five participating regionsJoint activities were implemented on local and regional levels and adapted to respective conditions. Achievements: The project resulted in increased local capacity and awareness of the participating regions, e.g. of entrepreneurs, local authorities, tourists and schoolchildren. Regions were able to profile considerably with respect to sustainable tourist utilization of sensitive areas and their conservation. Especially on the regional level did the project result in several integrated management and development plans.Important outputs are: spatial development and integrated regional development plans in participating regions.Durability is for example given by integration of results into official development plans (GE) or directly as legally binding documents (LT)Coordinated tourist quality standards, an angling policy, and environmental impact checklist for proposal for management of aquatic alien speciesInnovative online map solutions with geographical information System (GIS) implementation, angling guiding and information functionalitiesSustainable regional marketing (angling)strategies and concepts, i.e. including guiding and management approaches, durability by continued use of partners or increased official sustainability reputation of established tourist cooperation network (SE)Coordinated bilingual Natura 2000 brochure in five versions and information boards
