Sustainability and beyond
Date du début: 17 août 2016, Date de fin: 16 août 2017 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Background:Älvkullegymnasiet in Karlstad has about 1000 students and focuses on teaching technology, IT and science. This ccoming year, we will start a project where we develop different teaching methods for a sustainable society. The need for pedagogical knowledge in this area is vast. We are already working with sustainability and environmental studies at Älvkullegymnasiet, but we need to develop this so that it, in addition to environmental issues, also covers integration and language abilities. Objectives:We at Älvkullegymnasiet need to be develop these skills:New pedagogical methods:1. new methods of teaching environmental sustainability in the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Architecture.2. new methods of teaching cultural sustainability, ie how to show that our history and our buildings are essential to our funderstanding of the future.Language acquisition1. new methods on how to teach English as part of the integration in a society.Activities, participants and their profile:Our project has three tracks running parallel to each other and this will lead to the same goal, namely teaching for a sustainable future. We work with this continuously at the school, but feel that we must develop our projects to achieve our goals. Our three tracks are:1. Environmental sustainability2. Social sustainability and integration3. Cultural sustainabilityIf we can develop and learn more in these areas, we will fulfil our objectives with this project. How do we do this? The idea is that the various participants in the project will be a part of three "tracks".1. Environmental sustainability:Three teachers (Svea Johansson, Mona Lindberg and Johan Windfäll) will travel to Srednja gradbena, geodetska in okoljevarstvena Ljubljana in October 2016 to job shadow teachers in Natural science and Archeology. The idea is that we will have a common document with lesson plans and new ideas on teaching for sustainability.A teacher (Ulf Clarström) will take part in a course in circular economy in November 6 to 10, in Tilburg, Netherlands. The course is called "Education for Sustainable Development into a circular economy" and provides effective didactic tools for teaching circular economy in school. 2. Social sustainability and integrationSix teachers (where Ann-Katrin Gyllsten and Anette Fredsberg are the main coordinators) will attend a course in York, October 31 to November 4, 2016 entitled "Developing intercultural skills". The course deals with language acquisition and integration in schools. This is a very important part of everyday school life. 3. Cultural/historical sustainability and integrationTwo teachers (Madelene Renström and Mårten Molthéus, will job shadow at Svedjna medijska in graficna in Ljubljana, Slovenia in October 2016. The aim of the job shadowing in Ljubljana is to investigate social sustainability primarily from a cultural perspective. The focus will be cultural identity and integration. The teachers fråm Älvkullen will job shadow in the following subjects: history, sociology, geography and psychology and focus on how teaching takes up cultural identity. IIt is of great importance to discuss issues of humanity and how individual and group identity is based on written sources, traditions, historical and contemporary events. Results and long-term impact:The group which goes to Ljubljana aims to write a blog where they sum up each day's events. If permitted by the school, there will be YouTube clips of job shadowing, thus reaching out to other secondary schools. On Karlstad's municipality's internal webpage "Solsidan" the teachers will summarize their experiences. A team of teachers will be formed in order to plan how to build a sustainable green city. They will do this from the information gained during our activities. The project will also establish an international document on how to work with learning for sustainability.
