PROJET
TERMINÉ
This project aims at promoting a broader and deeper awareness and understanding of European integration and of the EU among high school students in Ottawa region. The Centre for European Studies at Carleton University has developed a successful EU Learning Project directed at high school students and their teachers (success measured by stats on outreach events, user/download statistics of online lesson plans and teaching material and evaluation surveys), funded by the Centre for Excellence grant from the European Commission. Through this application, further support is sought to continue, refine and add two extra activities to our developed EU Learning Project. With the exception of the annual Teachers Workshop, this activity is largely run by MA Students mainly from the EU stream of the University’s Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, but also MA Students from other departments/universities which have research interests in European studies. Faculty members from Carleton University oversee the content and program, and also participate in particular activities. One new activity proposed in this project will include keynote speakers which will be selected from faculty members at other universities which are part of EU Centres of Excellence. Delivery by MA students is both cost effective and also assists us in addressing young people in a language they can relate to, and in using social media techniques that will engage them. The MA students involved also benefit through enhancing their communication skills regarding EU affairs and increasing their personal engagement in the field of EU Studies. This project is highly innovative as it provides experiential learning though scenario simulation, graduate student conferences, teacher enrichment, and leveraging existing university-school interaction programming like the Enrichment Mini-Courses Program, attracting around 350 students in grades 8-12, who select to participate in EU-focused activities.
