O.B.S De Eglantier is a public school in Delft, with 350 students and 24 teachers divided over 13 groups. Our schools’ motto is: ‘Wij de wereld in’ meaning: ‘We enter the world’.
We wish to prepare our students for a world where boundaries are becoming less clear. Children will need an international approach to life and a good command of the English language is particularly advantageous.
For these reasons we also chose to work with IPC (the International Primary Curriculum) and VVTO (Early English, teaching English to all children, of all ages) seven years ago and are now participating in a pilot (TPO) where we’ll use English in 30% to 50% of our teaching, starting September 2015.
Over the years we have invested in the English curriculum in our school. Students, parents and teachers have been very enthusiastic about this. Currently in our school we have two English teachers one of whom is a native speaker. All children attend English lessons for 1 hour to 1 and a half hours a week and work towards an Anglia certificate. On top of that, the class teachers also teach English in their groups (approximately 15 minutes a week, something we hope to expand).
Using IPC gives us plenty of opportunities to naturally expand the international and English curriculum in our school. The standard of our teaching is very important to our school. Our students will benefit from teachers who have excellent language skills as well as sound methodology.
This is why we want to attend one of Pilgrim’s courses in Canterbury for a week, with all our teachers. Going together as a team, will mean that we all participate in the development of our school to start to integrate the English and IPC curriculum . We feel this is necessary in order for our staff to use English on a more daily basis in the classroom.
Pilgrim’s courses are known for their European approach. They are experienced in training teachers from all over the world and their trainers usually have worked in the field. This makes their courses both practical and inspiring. They are able to provide courses according to the wishes and needs of the attendees.
The fact that our teachers will stay with a host family and will need to speak English all week will be of great value. Total immersion is a very good method to quickly improve one’s language skills!
We expect our teachers to come back inspired and able to teach lessons in English. During the course we want them to develop their skills in the following three areas: their own language skills, methodology and CLIL. Since the language skills of our teachers are not all the same we want to give them the opportunity to work on this on their own level and speed. Coming back we hope they will feel more confident to teach in English.
Last but not least, we want to widen the horizon of our staff and give them an international experience. This experience will be extremely valuable to prepare our students for a world where boundaries are fading.
With all of this we hope to be ready to expand and integrate our English and International program and become a bilingual school in several years.
