Strengthening the Training of Students and Graduates in Social and Economic Sciences via a European Space for Lifelong Learning - FORTIUS

As a result of a previous analysis of social and economic science degrees and the identification of a number of gaps between what is offered by education providers and what is required by industry, the FORTIUS project aims to contribute to improving the training of students and recent graduates (particularly those following career paths unconnected to their studies) by ensuring that they have the opportunity to acquire new, basic skills as demanded by today’s employers. Project partners will initially undergo an analysis of the gaps between formal, degree-level study and the current requirements of employers. The results of this analysis will lead to the production of a series of guidance notes/recommendations for the adaptation of current degree-level study programmes and will involve recent graduates and current students with the aim of complementing existing academic study. Project results will include a skills map reflecting what is currently taught in the participating partner countries, specific to social and economic sciences; an analysis of the career paths of recent graduates from social and economic science; an analysis of industry demands; an outline of potential career paths for graduates in social and economic science based upon the skills being taught; recommendations for the adaptation of existing academic study in social and economic science to meet with industry requirements and a virtual FORTIUS web platform able to host the project results. All project results will be produced in English and in each of the partner languages. Whilst the findings will of course be presented to universities offering such academic study, it is felt by the partnership that the long-term benefit will also serve industry, as it is employers themselves that will eventually be provided with a more competent labour force. Dissemination will be key to the project and will involve an ongoing circulation of information throughout the lifetime of the project. The involvement of employers themselves in the analyses will allow the end results to also be circulated to this group. An end project seminar is foreseen by the project.
