Strengthening the energetic use of biomass in Central and Eastern Europe by establishing a standardised transnational consulting net for regions (COACH BioEnergy)
Date du début: 31 déc. 2008, Date de fin: 30 déc. 2011 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The increasing use of renewable energies, in this case focussed on Biomass, will play a considerable role in future regional development, both from the economic and the ecological side. Looking at existing activities in the field of biomass, the available knowledge regarding technologies and support opportunities is often underused and little harmonized which can be identified as one major obstacle. This is in particular true for rural areas where information and communication gaps are often bigger than in urban regions. The project “Coach BioEnergy” seeks to promote energy production from biomass in the Central Europe regions through the establishment of a transnational consultancy network. The main target groups of the consultancy service will be local actors: public bodies, producers of biomass and experts in economic and ecological developmentBy focusing on ecologically adapted process chains and the non-food use of biomass, the project will also consider current fears that energy production from biomass may cause bottlenecks in world-wide food provision. The four main topics which will be addressed are the biomass production including harvesting processes, the technologies of energetic transformation, logistics and relevant transportation chains and ecological and socio economic aspects of biomass production and biomass processing. Achievements: In COACH BioEnergy a transnational network of researchers and practitioners in bioenergy consulting business has been established in order to foster sustainable bioenergy use in Central Europe by transferring scientific knowledge into practice-oriented know-how. For the management of the network activities and knowledge exchange an innovative working platform, the so called Virtual Net was created. The following fields were identified as relevant areas for the consultancy practice: innovative technological solutions in biomass production, provision and conversion, illustrated by best practice examples from the participating countries in the project. In addition, the partnership assumed that for municipalities and small regions integrated system approaches are needed when planning better utilization of available biomass and municipal solid waste, therefore local renewable energy concepts were produced for pilot regions in the CENTRAL EUROPE area. Consultancy work focuses also on policy advice and evaluation;therefore the consortium provided a comprehensive analysis of the existing bioenergy-related policies in the countries and formulated clear recommendations for policy decision makers. The results of the joint activities are available on the project website. During the three-year implementation of the project, several actions for disseminating the goals and results were undertaken. In 2011, the contents of the project platform (technology descriptions and best practice examples) were demonstrated on information events in all participating countries and the results of the policy analysis activities were presented on National Policy Conferences. The COACH BioEnergy Magazine provides a picture both of the regional diversity of the bioenergy utilization practice and also of the links and similarities that have developed in recent years among the regions. The magazine was distributed on the final conference of the project and sent to the target audience of the project.
