Online hate speech is a widespread phenomenon which touches different vulnerable groups in our societies, such as migrants, minority groups, LGBT community etc. In particular, young people are inclined to be affected by radical ideas full of intolerance and hatred and express their negative attitude towards the aforementioned groups online. In order to change the situation for the better, the project aimed to equip youth workers and youth leaders with skills and competences in understanding the causes of hate speech and get to know creative tools to work with young people in their communities for overcoming the hatred. The training course "Stop hate, be mate" took place in Poland from 21 to 29 October 2015 and brought together 30 youth workers from Poland, Denmark, Estonia, Romania, Latvia, Turkey, Portugal, Greece, Italy and Bulgaria.
The objectives of the training course were the following:
-To understand the concept of hate speech and find out its main causes
-To promote the participants critical and creative thinking
-To equip youth workers with tools to tackle hate speech in their communities specifically targeted on minority groups
-To raise awareness on hate speech online and its threats to human rights of minority groups through the method of campaign
-To create strong network of youth workers and foster the implementation of new projects in European level.
The training course was based on Non-formal education methodology. Different exercises, team-building activities, workshops, role-plays, daily evaluations, working groups, discussions, debates, NGO fair, campaign and other creative activities were the integral part of this training course. Through various activities the participants profoundly examined the concept of hate speech, its main causes and forms online and worked together on elaborating creative tools and methods for tackling it.
The main aim of the project was creating an outdoor campaign in Warsaw. After the project, participants transferred their knowledge to members and volunteers of the organization, encouraged them to stand for the cause and promote the results of the project on local level. The impact of the campaign was visible by reaching many people and promoting tolerance among them.
