STAGES D'IMMERSION ET DE PERFECTIONNEMENT EN DIDACTIQUE DE L'ANGLAIS
Date du début: 1 juil. 2014, Date de fin: 30 juin 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Antoine Roussin High School is located in the city of Saint-Louis, Reunion. It provides both general and technical - vocational education in a very specific context : Reunion Island is a French overseas territory, an 11 hour flight from mainland France. As far as vocational training is concerned, insularity remains a major issue when it comes to opening up to other cultures or developing career opportunities for graduates in Reunion. Moreover the city of Saint-Louis itself is going through severe economic and social difficulties, making it even more difficult for our pupils. Very few of them actually have the opportunity of getting to know the European continent, even though they are European. Poor language and communication skills are the most characteristic consequences of insularity regarding education. Our pupils usually speak Creole at home and in most cases they have a poor command of French. Acquiring a thorough knowledge and the necessary skills in foreign languages is thus a further obstacle to professional mobility for them. Furthermore, examination requirements put growing emphasis on oral skills, foreign languages. In this context, the teachers of our school have to change the way they teach. Too often, textbooks do not offer activities that are adapted to pupils with such difficulties and provide little interest. As far as innovative methods and practices are concerned, teachers do not benefit from regular training and are not prone to creativity and thus less enthusiastic. Our school has been taking part in three consecutive Comenius projects. This has been a clear indicator that different ways of teaching, focusing on exchanges and communication by allowing a greater role to ITC tools are essential. The results for the pupils taking part in these projects were clearly better in terms of self-confidence and comunication skills. Therefore, it is very important to offer a much larger portion of our pupils even more diverse activities in a digital work environment. Exchanges between teachers provided by the project will also allow us to improve our teaching methods. Sharing teaching and professional methods with organizations where the language practiced is the language actually taught by our language and vocational teachers will also facilitate our capacity to open up to new teaching methods within Europe. At a local level, the impact of such a project will imply improving the teachers' skills and motivation, reinvesting innovative practices into our school curriculum, which are all major features in the fight for the success of our students. The teachers' self-reliance, together with the high level of commitment of our school community allow us to expect quick and positive results. This project is carried out within the framework of our school 's global policy and goals for the coming years. We are confident that we will progressively be part of a larger network of teachers on a European level and therefore benefit from fruitful exchanges in the near future. In the longer run, what we expect to gain from these actions will allow the whole school community and the city's youths to open up to Europe and meet the requirements of its framework.
