GO! Geel is a secondary school with a middle school (first grade) and an Atheneum (second and third grade, with general secondary education, technical secondary education and professional secondary education). The school population is about 800 pupils. Our slogan ‘A broad view on learning’ shows that our school is strong-minded about supporting innovating projects and educational innovation. In our vision, this includes a tailor-made approach to guide our pupils in discovering and developing their individual talents. For almost 15 years now, GO! Geel has been an enthousiastic collaborator in the education innovation initiated by the Flemish government. In 2003, this resulted in the start-up of the Cognosco department within the first grade. Regarding to content, this study programme complies with the learning goals of the first grade. Methodically and didactically, it is aimed at self-steering learning. The Proeftuinen (Test Gardens) were launched by the Flemish government in 2005 to build a bridge between the primary and secondary education and to make the primary school pupils more technically lettered. Since then, our school has developed two trajectories with neighbouring primary schools to meet this demand.Following on the Proeftuinen-project, our school now plays a pilot role as a design and test school for STEM. At GO! Geel, STEM has a fixed place on the curriculum, with STEM modules in the first grade, and a full STEM option in the higher grades. To be able to work on innovation, it is crucial for our school to actively look for input and challenges within Belgium and abroad. For this KA1 we selected a number of courses that will enable us to remain an enthousiastic pilot school for STEM in Flanders. For the 3 STEM-oriented courses in our application, the implementation will be very concrete: our teachers will use the acquired knowledge and skills to develop the STEM modules in the first grade and the STEM class in our second and third grade. With this new input, we will develop new modules and experiments, and consolidate our STEM network within Europe. The 3 courses on innovative teaching methods and ICT-skills in this application will influence the didactic practice. The skills can be used directly in class, and can be implemented in most courses. Differentiation is highly necessary within the contemporary teaching practice because it stimulates pupils to combine different competences. Finally, our school selected a course for directors and coordinating staff in orde to sharpen our policy towards business and industry. This includes improving our internship policy, but also working on the competences our pupils will need in a professional environment.During these courses, we hope to build an international network to exchange ideas and learn from each other in how to implement the acquired knowledge. To us, professionalisation is an intrinsic part of the educational mandate of our organisation. For a learning organisation, learning is as essential to life as breathing. That’s why we support this opportunity for our staff to breathe new oxygen with all our heart.
