The project targeted participants classified as VET learners that would benefit most from a mobility exchange visit in Malta that brought together a number of participants undertaking vocational qualifications in sport, media and arts, with the emphasis of sports. The inclusion of participants with physical disabilities provided an inclusive element to the project with a focus on access and opportunity for those students (#4). Twenty-six participants from a variety of backgrounds particularly those associated with social and economical disadvantageousness and those considered with fewer opportunities were selected, with the recruitment weighting more toward participants considered the best prospects that would gain most from undertaking a European mobility visit. The objectives of the project was to use 'sport' to bring together the respective participants, and align to individual training and learning programmes; this meant that participants were placed with companies for a 2-week period putting into practice existing and new-sought knowledge, within a work environment. This work placement enabled the participants to build on competencies and scaffold new experiences and skills set aligned to participants' professional development. Opportunities for social and cultural development of individuals and participants was offered through informal and semi-structured activities, for example, activities included incorporating additional sports programmes and evening fixtures with local sports clubs and organizations. Additionally, this allowed Media students to undertake a wider reach for their field studies outside of their designated daily work placement. The balance of opportunity contributed to participants increasing hard and soft skills' experiences relating to knowledge, subject matter and their social development within the context of new cultural settings. Preparatory activities provided a firm platform from which a high quality project could be delivered and the identity and final selection ensured a smooth pathway into the placement period. The mobility results exceeded expectations and these were formally recognised through the issuing of the Europass mobility certificate, furthermore, three students were nationally recognised by the British Colleges, this being a direct result of their mobility experience. The impact most certainly contributed to more assured and self confident individuals, and importantly, on returning from their experience, the participants achieved higher College results over and above their projections. The longer-term benefits include the continuation and collaborative working between the respective partners and this has culminated in both the College and Luxol Sports club working in partnership within future collaborations (i.e. Adult Education), and the European Commission funding stream is encouraging and enabling the College to work through and with the ECVET programme aligning their programming to European counterparts.
