Participation in sport and active play brings a number of personal, societal and health benefits to young people, especially to those who are marginalized. “Sporting Changemakers” is an international training course which will gather 28 youth workers and NGO representatives coming from 9 different countries (Italy, Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Malta, Poland and Romania). This training is designed to motivate youth workers to use sport and physical activity as tools for increasing active participation and social integration of young people. The main idea of this training course is to motivate youth workers, youth leaders, trainers and other civil society activists to use sport and physical activity as tools for increasing the active participation and fostering social inclusion of young people.
Main Objectives:
To develop a common understanding about the concept of active participation and to explore sport and physical activity as instruments for its promotion especially in terms of strengthening social cohesion and mutual understanding
To explore how sport and outdoor activities could foster social inclusion among the young people
To equip participants with practical examples of using sport as a tool for increasing active participation and inclusion of young people
To explore the concept of Leadership through sport
To build up competences of participants in the field of using sport as tool for enhancing inclusion and participation in order to ensure sustainability of the follow- up youth projects
Lateral objectives:
To empower youngsters, especially those with fewer opportunities to act as multipliers in the fields of youth participation in their local communities
Exchange of project ideas and best practices in youth work with a special focus on using sport as a tool for participation.
Working methodology:
The program of the course will be based on non formal education, intercultural dialogue and communication. It will be conducted by using an interactive and participative approach as well as many outdoor and sport activities. The activities implemented will consist of an introduction to the development of sport in culture, a discussion on the use of sport as an educational method and the sharing of best practice examples of how youth work can help to promote the physical health and social wellbeing of young people. The training course will stimulate active participation, sense of initiative and involvement of the young people in society and also their involvement in sport and physical activities. Participants' prior experiences in youth work, particularly at local and regional level, will be important and used in the development of the learning process. Active group/team work, role-plays, outdoor and sport activities and plenary discussions, as well as theoretical inputs will characterize the program of the course in order to cover all aspects of the project themes.
The expected results are that the participants will gain knowledge, will discuss their ideas and will be supported to design their own practical examples on how to use sport as a tool in non-formal education settings, specially related to active participation and inclusion. Our 8-day training course will be held in the little town of Slanic Moldova, in Bacau region, Romania in October 2014.
