The EVS-project "Spielend Leben lernen" (Playfully learning for life) intends to facilitate a 12-months European Voluntary Service by a 23-year-old young women from Turkey and by a 19-year-old young man from Denmark, to take place in the host organisation Aktivspieplatz Raitelsberg e.V. (AKI) in Stuttgart. The AKI is a non-profit organisation for non-formal learning for children and young people, located in the borough of Raitelsberg, which is characterized by exclusively consisting of social housing. The AKI aims at providing a place for playing and social learning to these children and young people, who have very varied cultural, religious and social backgrounds, and by doing so, oddering them an alternative to the streets and the often problematic situations at home. At the Aktivspielplatz, they can playfully learn social skills and strategies for non-violent conflict solution. As part of a team of staff members and volunteers, the EVS volunters participate in the work in all areas of the AKI and take part in the practical implementation of educational methods and concepts. Working with the children and youths who visit the AKI, they experience the direct effects of societal issues such as social exclusion and immigration, particularly concerning children of first and second generation-immigrant families who are caught in the tensions between traditional roles/cultural identities and their current environment with all related and often conflicting expectations. Thorugh the contradictions between the relatively affluent city of Stuttgart and the socio-economic backgrounds of the young visitors, the EVS volunteers also gain insight into the variety of German realities. Through the daily contact with the EVS volunteers, as young people with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, the children and youths vice versa also gain insight into the variety of European cultures. They also gain an understanding of the many possibilities to become active, for instance by volunteering and other forms of non-formal learning. The host organisation AKI welcomes these multiplicator effects in particular, as the yenrich the work they do at the Aktivspielplatz.
