SPEAK OUT is a youth exchange that brought together 54 participants from Austria, France, Denmark and Ireland for 8 days (7 nights) in July 2015. The project activity centred on 8 days of collaborative theatre-making exploring aspects of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The theatre-making created and showed to the public pieces of drama that highlight the fact we've got this Charter, and that it applies to all countries in the EU. So, each project group within the exchange looked at a common right they feel is abused and they described, in a drama, how they saw that right being abused in their communities or countries. Following this we held a discussion with the public audience about how we can promote the Charter in our work and personal lives. The young people on this project have all reacted vociferously to what they see as the erosion of certain rights over the last few years. They felt a bit helpless and, prior to the exchange, were actually unaware that the Charter existed. They feel that more people should know about it, and perhaps base their organisations' ethos upon the principles in it. During the youth exchange, participants brought a short piece of theatre that they made at home in their own countries These were shown on the opening night of the activity-week, as part of a formal launch of the project, to media and invited public. The Mayor of Kildare, Cllr Fiona O' Loughlin, officially launched the exchange. Each group's presentation was made in response to one of the six principles in the Charter (Dignity, Freedoms, Equality, Solidarity, Citizen’s Rights, Justice). Other products included (1) a number of posters designed by the participants in their home countries prior to the exchange. These are available on our website. They each draw attention to the Charter. They contain a web-link that directs people who click on it to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. (2) a short film about the project made by the Irish team.
