Sowing the Learning Seeds

The overall aim of the project was to exchange experiences about, and methods for maintaining, well-operating networks and learning campaigns that lead to increased participation in adult education. The problems were the low motivation and insufficient knowledge and skills of the members of voluntary networks that promote learning and low participation levels in lifelong learning campaigns among recognised learners and social partners. The project was led by the need to broaden the understanding of the essence of formal, non-formal and informal learning and encourage social groups that tend not to participate. A total of six meetings were organised, three of which were scheduled to coincide with learning campaigns in Ireland, Slovenia and Estonia. The SLS activities enabled the participating adult education organizations to acquire knowledge and experience that will help them to improve how they handle the challenges they face with their learning campaigns. Partners became acquainted with innovative approaches in the other countries in several fields: namely, successful work with volunteers, the use of traditional and social media, learners as ambassadors for adult education, involving new target groups such as disabled people, and effective educational networks and structures. Partners adopted strategies and ideas that were suitable for them and the visits and discussions lead to the implementation of new activities in the partner countries. All the partners carried out new learning promotion activities in their own countries. An informal network of organisations committed to promoting and campaigning for adult learning has been established, allowing partners to continue to support each other’s work, share ideas and collaborate where appropriate in the future.
