A) Context/background of project; This one-week project will help all the participants gain a greater understanding of issues that affect non-EU migrants and people with disadvantaged backgrounds when integrating within European cities. Throughout the workshop, teaching and learning, panel discussions, activities, networking and sharing of ideas in relation to intercultural interactions will take place as British participants will gain a greater understanding of how the often perceived ‘UK migration dilemmas’ and not just British but European-wide issues that extend to the south of Italy.B) Objectives of your project; The objective of this workshop is to widen the understanding of British participants on the current and complex migration issues surrounding non-EU refugee and migrant communities in Mediterranean countries. Participants will be able to compare and contrast Italian methods of working with migrant methodologies against their own. In response to the various critical events affecting European countries; the focus on this workshop will not only be based on being able to communicate effectively with people of different backgrounds but gaining ‘hands-on’ practical skills of working to better the lives of integrated non-EU migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. C) Number and profile of participants; 15 participants will be selected from our pool of workers from the consortium. All the participants have expressed the need to acquire skills in discussing, learning and observing historical and current migration trends and gaining more of a greater insight into some of the issues, dilemmas and solutions that many non-EU migrants endure and will benefit from. They have expressed the need to renovate and improve their understanding of how the often perceived ‘UK migration dilemmas’ is not just British but European-wide issues that extend to the south of Italy.D) Description of activities; Presentations on current and historical migrant trends of non-EU migrants in Mediterranean countries, 2 day visits to migrant organizations and visiting the UN-awarded Riace, Caulonia e Stigliano (3 small villages that thanks to the arrival and integration of refugees have been repopulated after the local inhabitants emigrated to the North of Italy or abroad).E) Methodology to be used in carrying out the project; Kairos Europe together with Wellfield Education and Red Ochre are the members of the national consortium. Kairos Europe is the applicant and the other two will contribute to the implementation, management, dissemination and recruitment. And ITAKA Training will be the host organization in Southern Italy providing the 7 day professional development course. All these organizations will be constantly in contact via Skype, Emails and Phone calls. The course will be delivered via classroom presentations utilizing methods such as Problem based learning, student centered approach, semi-structured face to face interviews with migrants and site visits.E) Description of results;1) The creation of a blog and a Facebook page, which will be easy to reach by everybody. 2) Establish new ways and ideas for promoting common European values, intercultural dialogue and tackle social exclusion with a focus on non-EU refugee and asylum seeking communities. 3) Acquiring new skills for training teachers, mentors, trainers in migration issues, community workers and leaders. 4) Participants will be equipped with the necessary intercultural awareness and communication skills they need to relate with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds (with a focus on refugees)F) Impact envisaged:Participants will have a deeper understanding of the current changes taking place in a European society (with a focus on Southern Italy) and its multiculturalism; understand and make sense of diversity, and be able to talk about it productively and meaningfully. Furthermore, they will get new ideas on how to update their approach and methods and help migrants/refugees in needs. It will also give the participants the confidence to develop a more international approach in their day by day work.G) Potential longer term benefits;Increase awareness and prospects of international actions. To establish new projects and partnerships in the future. Furthermore; to increase in the consortium staff knowledge of the migrants/refugees issue across Europe and being more confident in their job and to allow our staff to get new knowledge in how to promote social inclusion and intercultural exchange among learners and groups they deal with coming from different backgrounds and cultures being a benefit to the next generation and migrant organizations in the future.
