SONORA addresses the need for improved multimodal accessibility in Central Europe in South-North dimensions. Building upon past project experiences which focused on the landscape and general transport conditions and plans within the area, SONORA targets to incisively bring forward the state of the art on the deployment of primary transport infrastructure and services, through trans-national collaboration to prioritise: transport network development, removal of obstacles in the infrastructure realisation process, activation of services along itineraries. These activities will support the development of a primary central European multimodal transport network in the South-North dimension, through targeted interventions regarding firstly specific needs of individual areas which have trans-national relevance for the integrity of the entire corridor, secondly improved accessibility for landlocked countries to European seaports and thirdly facilitating intermodality for road, rail, waterways. The establishing of strategic cooperation between and within trans-European transport corridors, the facilitation of connections between high priority transport corridors and national and regional networks and the support of deployment of sustainable transport modes are especially focused within the project. Achievements: SoNorA objectives have been successfully pursued by means of a wide set of multidisciplinary activities which, altogether, allows to assess, strengthen and highlight the SoNorA strategic idea providing a synergic added value to the relevant achievements with regards to the general goals: transport network development, removal of obstacles in the infrastructure realisation process, activation of services along itineraries. With reference to transport network development, the relevant foreseen results have been achieved especially by means of transport planning and modelling activities. These activities also supported the development of proposals for the multimodal network, including considerations for the Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T) revision process. The SoNorA TEN-T proposal included both a methodology and its application to Central Europe context which constituted one of SoNorAs major awarded outcomes. With respect to the removal of obstacles in the infrastructure realisation process, a thorough insight into this multi-facet theme along with concrete propositions was provided. Special attention was paid to aspects on sustainability particularly in this downturn period. Analysis regarding activation of services along itineraries were also duly carried out even though this was also affected by the the economic period (limiting the development of new services). Moreover, other specific goals were positively achieved:a) needs of individual areas which have trans-national relevance for the integrity of the entire corridor have been evaluated both by means of analytical capabilities of model activities and with specific focuses on regional/local level (e.g. action 3.5 and 3.6)b) conditions for improved accessibility for landlocked countries to European seaports have been dealt as a specific case of the previous point but also in the may business cases analysis performed in the wp5 referred to portc) The elaborations of proposal for facilitating intermodality has been carried out with generally good results both with reference to infrastructure needs and development of concrete proposal for new services for road, rail and to less extent waterways.d) Strategic cooperation between and within trans-European transport corridors have been dealt in the successful development of a network proposal for the TEN-T revision, in spite of the difficulty of the issue; e) A specific deal has been paid to connections between high priority transport corridors and national and regional networks in the results achieved (especially in action 3.6); f) support the deployment of sustainable transport modes have been dealt (as foreseen in wp4 activities) with particular attention paid to the emerging issue of green corridors idea (which had a much more relevance in the consortium discussion than previously foreseen when preparing the AF).
