The training course focused on the social issues such as poverty and marginalization and young people with lack of opportunities. In other words as its name suggested it, "So close, yet so far", the project was designed to inform and generate awareness on the poverty matter in Europe resulting from lesser opportunity backgrounds. The youth workers gained the skills and knowledge to help youth with fewer opportunities to combat poverty. The organizers aimed to teach them methods to combat it so that opportunities did not remain out of reach. The youth workers attained new knowledge and skills in relation with the young people with disadvantaged backgrounds.
The training course was entirely based on the concept and methods of non-formal education and allowed participants, with help and support of the trainers, to develop their own educational games, which could be later used in their own work and among members of their local communities. As a result of the TC, we expected to equip the participants with new skills and know-how, which was and will be extremely useful in their every day work of sharing culture of peace, mutual understanding and respect: this time, not in a game, but in real life.
The training course focused on the social issues that poverty creates in marginalized areas, and on the other hand, the opportunities, or lack of, which young people coming from such areas are deprived of. The training course aimed to create an environment whereby the participants were given a platform not only to discuss about the situation in their countries, but more significant, to discuss ways and means through which the young people could be empowered to have superior chances of having a better future.
The participants were from 7 different states of the European Union together with Turkey, so as to diversify the group as much as possible and had a healthy mixture of people with different visions and coming from countries of different exclusion issues. This helped multi cultural relations and international cooperation among different European countries. The methodology was entirely non-formal; starting from effective ice-breakers and team-building activities at the beginning of the agenda to cooperation between the participants to create their own projects and ways of repelling poverty and exclusion at the end of their stay in Slovakia.
