SME Knowledge Exploitation and Learning Through Knowledge Management

The project 'SME Knowledge Exploitation and Learning Through Knowledge Management' will improve the informal learning process and knowledge exploitation in SMEs through the application of knowledge management principles. A knowledge management tool will be developed and adapted for use in small firms, with the idea that this can lead to SME self-learning and business-focused training. Project outputs focus upon: development of a SME Knowledge and Skills Audit toolkit to assess gaps in skills, knowledge creation, sharing and use; production of a handbook and a trainers guide to support the procedure guidelines and a project website for discussion, sharing and dissemination of the project results. The above will be tested with SMEs and trainers/consultants responsible for implementation of the project outputs. Tools and techniques for knowledge management that are currently on the market are designed with large, technologically sophisticated companies in mind. This project aims to fill the gap for SMEs and addresses their specific training needs by focusing on non-formal/informal training. The project will enable SMEs to identify knowledge gaps/bottlenecks and skill shortages/needs in an effort to improve training and business solutions that enable small firms to self-learn through the process of improved knowledge management. Project results will be disseminated through a range of media including the press, newsletters/brochures, the internet and exhibitions.
