SmartComp - Smart competitiveness for the Central Baltic region (SmartComp)

Maritime sector has always been sensitive for economical changes. During the past years maritime clusters in the Central Baltic region have faced tightened competition, new requirements of environmental protection, structural changes and weakened competitiveness. Maritime clusters play an important role in different sectors of economy and thus its profitability has wide influences to other sectors of economy, too. In the future competitiveness of the maritime clusters in the Central Baltic region will be even more depending on how well innovativeness and profitable, continuously renewing business can be combined by the networks operators with the design and production of new technologies and products which are also ecological. SmartComp aims to support smart, environmentally sustainable development, growth, competition and cooperation between maritime clusters, cities and universities in the Central Baltic region. In order to achieve the aims the project provides comprehensive understanding on the current state and future of the Central Baltic maritime cluster, recognises the problematic areas hindering the clusters growth and globalisation, identifies best practices in encouraging ecological business innovations, and creates smart business operations models to be applied to the maritime cluster in the Central Baltic region (WP2). Through training and consultation, individual companies get to benefit from these results and together contribute to the smart brand of Central Baltic region (WP3). In order to strengthen the competitiveness of the Central Baltic maritime cluster, triple helix smart co-operation will be increased through policy development roundtables and triple helix database. The project aims to strengthen the brand of Central Baltic maritime clusters and thus a brand strategy is created for the clusters at the beginning of the project. The realisation of the strategy will be started during the project and its effectiveness will be followed regularly. In order to strengthen the competitiveness of the Central Baltic maritime cluster, triple helix smart cooperation will be increased through policy development roundtables and triple helix database. The project culminates into an international SmartComp Forum, where the results and achievements of all WPs shall be presented and summed up. The event deepens the triple helix networks and sets a fruitful basis for innovative collaboration within the region. Simultaneously the forum strengthens the brand of Central Baltic maritime cluster and encourages external organisations to innovative and ecological cooperation with the clusters of Baltic Sea region (WP4). Achievements: The project SmartComp supported a smart and environmentally sustainable development of the maritime clusters in the Central Baltic region. A better understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by the clusters was created, and scenarios about the development of the Baltic Sea maritime clusters were presented. The overviews produced by the project created a basis for further research, training and consultation, as well as for branding and policy development. Companies were able to benefit from the networking part of the project and contributed to the development of the maritime clusters. The project provided a comprehensive understanding of the current and future state of the Central Baltic maritime cluster, recognising the problematic areas hindering the clusters growth and globalisation. In addition, policy recommendations were drafted addressing both the EU level, the national levels as well as other main actors of the maritime clusters of the region. In order to facilitate the co-operation between the public, private and research sectors an extensive database was cretated including contact details of the main organisations and companies active in the maritime sphere of the Central Baltic region. The project results were summarized in a series of research reports and other publications.
