Smart Technology Solutions for Children with Dyslexia

Dyslexic students, who often have average or above average intelligence, generally only need to be taught in a different manner, with a sound educational intervention, in order to learn basic skills and be as successful as other students. It is estimated that 5 to 10% of students that have traits or a level of dyslexia and 15 to 20% of primary school pupils suffer from a language-related learning disability.Various educational systems have recognised the need for specialised care, and dyslexic students are now given help through Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and are also allowed extra times during exams. However frustration remains a constant part of the life of a dyslexic child. Simple tasks like copying homework from the board is a daily problem. Also parents find that their dyslexic child often arrives home with incoherent and incomplete notes taken from the classroom and hence being unable to help their child adequately.This project bridges the missing link between school and home work by using ICT as an integrated solution for students suffering from dyslexia. Smartboards, portable tablet computers and Internet-based technologies are combined to develop ICT tools and apps that encourage teachers and students in utilising them, whilst offering a window to parents to get better information on what happened at school.The consortium believes that through autonomous learning, dyslexic students will be more able to manage their own learning goals. This project is therefore proposing smart ICT based tools (such as smart phones, tablets and smart boards) for ages 9 to 12 and pilot this in 3 countries (the Czech Republic, Sweden and Turkey). Lesson plans and materials will be seamlessly made available also in the home, using the latest peer-to-peer systems for data sharing. Increased used of digital lesson materials will enable dyslexic students, their teachers and parents to capture and bring along educational content wherever they go.
